I have 3 weeks of air and ship time starting in a few days and need a good book to read. I'm trying to think of what I'd like to read but have been unable to come up with anything specific. I'm open to most/any suggestions.
Thanks
"The Annals of Imperial Rome" by Cornelius Tacitus. Get the Michael Grant translation. Tacitus was a Senator in Ancient Rome writing about events that transpired before his time, but from secret documents that only few (such as himself) had access to. The parallels to modern society are stunning. Tacitus has an incredible gift of understanding human nature, then summarizing it in catch phrases such as: "suited for office if only he had not had to hold it". Tacitus invented the phrase: "national interest". It is stunning how little we have changed. |
