Tyler Not Quitting Aerosmith (May Have Been A Negotiation Tactic)

Joe Perry hinted the other day that Aerosmith might replace Steven Tyler after the lead singer said he was going to focus on "brand Tyler." If that was a tactic to get Tyler to commit to Aerosmith, it worked.

Tyler was a surprise guest at the Joe Perry Project show at the Fillmore in New York last night. According to Rolling Stone online, Tyler reportedly came out and said that he wasn't leaving the band, adding "Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I, (expletive), am the rainbow!” He then sang lead on "Walk This Way." Later, TMZ caught up with the two separately and each confirmed that Tyler was staying put.

I am of the opinion that being an aging pop/rock star is a dangerous career. I suspect that guys like Danny of Danny and the Juniors, or even one of my favorites, Del Shannon, may have been pushed over the edge by having to sing “you can rock and you can roll or you can bop or you can stroll at the hop” or “my run run run run runaway” over and over again. Sometimes to aging and shrinking audiences.

I don’t see anything that would keep ‘70’s rockers immune from this problem. One “Walk this way” or “Dream on” too many is going to push someone over.

To each his own for sure. I won't act elitist about the notion that I am putting forth here, but it's been LONG while since Aerosmith has been at the cutting edge or even the forefront of the mainstream. They certainly have a vast library of hits that can keep them touring into virtual infinity, though. They will never have a shortage of fans.

There are 2 ways of viewing music, in my opinion. Some of us latch on to bands when they are rising and we never abandon them. Some of us though are always looking for something new. Although I like music that fits both categories, I see myself as more of the latter type. I am always looking for new sound. Aerosmith has been duplicated in their industry by so many knock-offs and influenced so many others, that frankly, the sound is old. Bands like GNR, Aerosmith and AC-DC have their rightful place in music history, but we are pretenders if we believe they are 'avant-garde.', which is the crux of the argument of those that call them 'nobodies.'

I honestly believe that Music is very personal and that is why these discussions get personal and sensitive when they shouldn't.

BTW, In my honest opinion, 'Dream On' is Aerosmith's best song.
