You’re right, I had her confused with Jessica Simpson, whose sister Ashlee was caught lip synching.

Most of what gets played on television is fake. Lip syncing and the use of pre-recorded backing music is almost universal. You can't get amps to break up properly and give a good clean distortion unless you drive them hard, and you can't do that in a television studio. Besides, a television appearance can make a band so why take the chance that something might go wrong?

Here is a television performance of Private Idaho by the B52's. The record skips at 2:34 and some of the band members take a minute to figure out what to do. (VIDEO)
