Charlie Chaplin Attacked By Hindu Extremists
It seems those pesky, intolerant, religious extremists in India are at again. Last month they made a big fuss about Valentine's Day which has no religious meaning for me nor most of the rest of the Western World; that is, unless one defines getting laid as a religious experience:-)
But of course, like many of our commercial holidays, Valentine’s Day is associated with early Christian martyrs and this seems to be one of the catalysts for the protests, threats and harassments being carried out by these fanatics.
They’ve also attacked women in bars for wearing “western clothes and drinking alcohol”.
Now if that wasn’t enough to make you want to zap one of these cow worshipers with a cattle prod (just kidding) then perhaps the recent activities of the “Hindu Taliban” will earn your ire or at least your ridicule.
It seems that these sanctimonious self-appointed morality police have set their sights on a 67 foot (20m) Charlie Chaplin statue being erected in Karnataka because he was a 'Christian'.
“The Chaplin sculpture, which would have shown him in his baggy trousers and bowler hat, was being built…near the town of Udupi…and was to form part of a set for a dance routine in a film but work ground to a halt when Hindu activists chased the workers away and buried the materials. (source)
Funny thing is…Chaplin was an avowed agnostic who frequently articulated his opposition to organized religion, especially Christianity.
There is a bright spot in all this though since local artists are planning a rally for the Chaplin statue which will include and old fashioned peaceful sit-in. Democracy in action...you got to love it.
