I work in IT - new work XPS 1340 shipped w/XPhome SP3 - clean installed to Win 7 64 bit. Never bothered installing Vista on this laptop - memory hog, HD hog, Veesta just plain stinks. Windows 7 is a much better OS compared to Vista 32 or 64 bit.

Last week, ordered my free copy of Win 7 for home Dell laptop which arrived Oct 1 - can't wait to get that one off of Vista Business 32bit.

I WILL do a clean install to Win 7 - best way to go - upgrades don't always install everything cleanly over the existing OS - and have many years of experience with all the flavors of Windows OSs.

I just say NO to the upgrade option.

The Win 7 enhancements (to Vista) appear to be more cosmetic then performance based.

Many of the Win 7 enhancements are performance based, shaving memory requirements and cutting how much background services eat into your experience. It's been faster than XP for me in two side-by-side, identical virtual environments.

I've been convinced. Clean install for me. Thanks!

Save yourself some grief later on - back up your data, re-format the hard drive, and do a clean install from scratch.

Hey Florida, I have another question.

I, too, have a Dell notebook. The hard drive came partitioned in two: an OS volume and a Recovery volume.

Can I just wipe the one partition (OS) and install or should I reformat and mess up the Dell recovery volume? Or back up and reload both???

I’m not sure what to do here.

I have a bigger problem... how do i downgrade from Windows Server 2008 r2 to Windows 7?

Is there any programs similar to PCMover3 for XP that can help me out of this mess I put myself in.

I have 4 WinServer2008r2 boxes that need to be converted.

I wiped both partitions on my work laptop - don't want to recover back to vista home - and I will wipe both on my home laptop - for same reason. As long as you keep regular backups - future reinstalling or repairing the OS should not be a problem.

But if you want to keep the recovery partition, that is fine too - it’s all about preference and your level of expertise when a problem arises.
