I fear....Gone are the days of old! What do you think?

Like most of you, I have a house and work 5-6 days a week. I have 3 children and a dog. My wife works because we have a child in college and 2 in private school. We work hard all day long and then come home and try to balance time with our family and things that have to get done around the house. Our schedules are busy running from place to place and enjoying the time spent together. In the summer we would hang out with our friends or take a ride to the shore and simply grow as a family. We teach on Sunday mornings to instill God's morals and values in young kids...it is truly a blessing. Our main concerns in life would be:

-Can we get the driveway fixed? -How are the kids doing in school? -When will I find time to cut the lawn? -Am I spending enough time with God, Kids and Wife?

Now things seem different. I find that I wake up early concerned about losing our Freedoms! Never before in my entire life would I have thought this would happen...NEVER! I wake up in panics and begin to pray. My life is consumed with the rapid growth of government and laws that dictate how to live our lives. Laws that mimic those of Cuba and Russia and not of what this great country was founded on. I lament on my children's future and wonder how they will enjoy the freedom that I enjoyed when growing up. My daughter who is in college is very concerned and does not want to spend too much on education in fear that it's a "waste"...(Continued below)

We look around and see people buying 55" LCD tv's and stuff them into their 1995 Reliant "K" cars...as we pay over 50% in total taxes...yes, 50% of our hard earned money is going into a "black hole" as we struggle!! We hear of "hate speech" bills and anti-gun propaganda. We see Hollywood and other leaders praising dictators and Communism. I could go on and on, but I am at the point where I feel helpless in defending the future of my family and this country.

My question is: What do you do to get by? At what point do we say enough is enough? How can we stop this destruction of this great nation?

I find solace in prayer and seeking God...but must admit my faith is not as strong as I would expect it to be. I have gone to all TEA parties (even played at one), gone to Town halls and written/called my government...with no response. I find myself getting frustrated and angry because Freedom seems to be slipping from our grasp. Am I alone in feeling like this?

“Am I alone in feeling like this?”

Nope, more than half of America feels the same.

Get involved. Do something. Defending freedom means you have to sacrifice sometimes.

Dude, the “days of old” are long gone.

When I was kid, I used to wander my neighborhood and the empty lots around it and my parents didn’t care where I was, as long as I showed up for dinner.
Nowadays, you don’t let your kids out of sight.

I feel for you. We used to be that way.

Now, I joined the national guard, my wife quit and homeschools the kids, we got rid of the tv (never had cable), my wife teaches fitness for fun and the whole family does it, we moved into a house that is inexpensive and paid off our crappy cars. I take the bus to work most days, which gives me time to read, pray or catch up on work so I don’t have to work overtime.

I’m not saying it’s even possible for most people, but sometimes you have to make a tough choice and cut the fat, even when the fat seems like tasty meat.

Concerning taxes, that’s why my wife no longer works. The difference in our take home pay is tiny compared to the amount of work she has to do. In addition, we would have to pay tuition for our kids to go to private school. We’d end up paying for her to work.

Many of us felt similar when Clinton was in office, but we now see that Clinton pales in comparison to Obama.

We survived Clinton and we will survive Obama.

There are two things we MUST do:

1) Stop/Water-down/Slow Obama’s legislative agenda.

2) Work like hell to get good conservatives on the ballot and into office.

We cannot control the little things Obama will do behind the scenes with executive orders, etc. We cannot control who Obama infiltrates into our government.

We need to watch for these so they can be corrected at some time in the future, but, like Clinton, there were many hidden bombs laid for us.

Stay confident, stay focused, and stay the course. We are making progress against the liberals.

Yes...plenty of ammo, guns and canned goods. But to make matters worse, I live in NJ!! Being in this liberal state there are few conservatives to speak with...most of our friends (though conservative think we are nuts). So it is like being in solitary confinement....and no, I simply can not just move.

Our children can’t/won’t pay off the massive debt the fools and crooks in DC have run up. National default and/or hyperinflation are coming. It may in two years, or ten years, but it’s inevitable, regardless of which party is in power. Hang on and do your best to plan accordingly.

When opportunity presents itself, be courageous enough to state and support your beliefs. It is amazing how many people are out here but not aware of others right beside them that feel the same way.

I have found enormous relief in the fact that the kids I volunteer around are hugely conservative in their beliefs even though they are constantly exposed to the liberal junk. They ask the best questions and are not mindless zombies.

What do you do to get by?

The only thing that will ever destroy the US is Americans feeling sorry for themselves. The US has problems but it is still in front of every other country in the world. Throw away your TV, stop worrying about other people's problems, and just go live your life.

Agreeing with post #5. Life is what you make it. We can sit at home and find ourselves agreeing with the Liberal media, that conservatism is dead - or get involved and find a TEA Party. It was an eye opening experience for me. I could not believe how powerful the sleeping giant has become. Conservatism is not dead, in fact it is as big or bigger than it ever was if you know where to look.

As far as preserving the days of old in your own home. I could not stress the importance of having the family together at the dinner table each night. That, and bringing them to Church on Sunday morning are the two most important things I could suggest. Other things we do in our home, is we don't watch the alphabet channels on TV, except for watching the local 5 o'clock news. Most of our TV watching is limited to good movies, many of which are old classic favorites. My 8 year old son loves the classic Disney movies, that I loved when I was a kid, like Charlie the Lonesome Cougar, and the Ugly Dachshund, and other family favorites from the good old days. He also likes sitting with me to watch my Gilligan's island DVD collection, and F-Troop. A dream come true for me.

And walk into our house, and often you will hear our Sirius player playing Sinatra, or classic country, or even the laughter from the Fibber McGee & Molly show or Duffy's Tavern from Sirius Old time radio.

Life is what you make it.

“Am I alone in feeling like this?”

No. But there is a very big point to be made here.

It is: The life you describe is idylic and represents the so-called “American Dream”. In the distant past, while someone such as you and your family were living the life you describe, someone LIKE YOU was becoming a member of the school board, city council, state legislature and so on.

In the past three decades, however, someone WHO IS NOT AT ALL LIKE YOU became a member of the school board, city council, state legislature and so on.

No one “took” or “is taking” our country.

Those of us who thought it was “enough” to lead good lives and raise our families didn’t take the time to GET INVOLVED at ALL levels of government, particularly right in our own communities. (Interestingly, Sarah Palin is a good example of someone who recognized this and she is being vilified for upsetting the applecart. The point with Sarah can be summed up in one word: Bravery)

I am probably one of the older/est participants here at FR and I have a friend who has been involved in back-room politics since the ‘70’s.

Way back in the ‘70’s she told me, straight-forwardly, that there was a nation-wide movement to take over our government and that it was targeted at the grass roots, school board level and would work its way up the chain.

She was absolutely right and we are now seeing what that ‘movement’ has achieved; we are living the results.

Stop feeling afraid and put that fear to work; go out and find out what it takes to sign up for a committee at the local school board, or other local community government level that is open to all citizens.

That “hanging out with friends” is what has tripped up this nation. GET OFF YOUR DUFF AND GET INVOLVED AND STOP THRASHING ABOUT FEELING AFRAID AND SORRY FOR YOURSELF.

One of the most damaging results of the past 40 years (it started with Kennedy) is the idea that has inculcated itself into our nation’s ‘conscience’ that you have to have a Harvard education to be involved in government. Harry Truman didn’t nor did Eisenhower. We need to disavow the notion that only Ivy League hypocrites have a ‘right’ to run anything.

Why don’t you stop “hanging out with friends” and you and those “friends” start getting involved. Use that “fear” to face the attacks that you will experience. Man up and stop whining (only liberals whine). And don’t turn tail and run when they criticize you.

And one last comment, since I’m on a roll/rant; I also have a friend who was a pre-teen in Nazi Germany. You should hear what she has to say, to wit, “They all knew what was happening! They all new!” She is referring to the sit-on-their-hands Germans who knew the Jews were being carted off.

You can whine or you can stand up. You can whine and stand up. You can stand up and when THEY whine you can remain standing.

My life is consumed with the rapid growth of government and laws that dictate how to live our lives.

Then it's time for you to turn off the news for a while. Even FR. Take a week or two's break and breathe awhile. It sounds like you're doing all the "right" things by your family. You won't help them by becoming a basketcase over things that are, quite simply, out of your direct control.

I know, because I get to that place sometimes, too, and you just have to shut down and get yourself back together.
