Did you ever read the Dangerous Visions collection of SciFi stories? Harlan Ellison was the editor. He collected the stories from the greatest SciFi authors, asking them for the one story they always wanted to publish but knew that no publisher would touch it.

The collection was a big hit. So was Dangerous Visions 2.

In the forward to DV3, Ellison confessed that he had caved. He had turned down a SciFi story. It was a tale of some alien snot vampires stalking the earth. They were just like Earth vampires, but their fangs were on the lower jaw and pointed upward. They would grab their victims in a dark ally, shove the fangs up the victims nostrils and suck the snot out of the poor (conservative) victim.
