Unemployed nephew too good for garbage collection
self | 10/25/09 | self

It gets better. Said unemployeed nephew showed up at our door just over a week ago, after we didn't respond to his email asking if he could come and stay with us while he looked for a job. He drove nearly 1000 miles expecting us to let him sleep in his truck parked on our driveway. Of course, he had a sob story. After a few days of being gone for 2-3 hours each, he's says he's now found a job...we'll see. He's been careful not to expect us to provide coffee, meals, laundry, gas for his truck, etc.

During a discussion with my nephew, a 30-something unemployed laborer, about how we pay to dispose of our trash, he emphatically stated that he would never work collecting garbage, especially not in the summer. The response came automatically without hesitation from my husband: it seems the safety net and minimum wage is too high in our country if we can't find people to do jobs like that. My nephew didn't say anything after that, but I'm sure the truth hurts, especially when it comes from his favourite uncle.

No good deed goes unpunished. I bet over 60% of people who help out another person end up getting screwed in return for their help.

Reminds me of that old saying: “Why do you hate me, I never tried to help you”

I had a similar experience with retail except mine was Best Buy. I enjoyed the job and my coworkers. Some of my best job-related memories are from there.

"...Mom wouldn't even let me in the house wearing those clothes...."

When I was 17-18 I cut fish in a seafood restaurant. My dad made me strip down to my underwear before entering the house. My friend who worked with me got pulled over by the police, who began searching his car. The officer did not get far before he began gagging from the smell of old, rotting fish, and he let my friend go.

Later, I worked at a Starbucks for 3 years. The coffee smell was overpowering and gross after a while, and my dad made me strip for that, also. At that Starbucks, in Millbrae, CA was the first and hopefully last I scooped someone else's poop (when the customer toilet backed up).

Then again, I don't have kids yet, so the sky is the limit as far a scooping poop goes.

Anyone who says being a parent isn’t a job doesn’t actually raise their own children.

You've got that right.

I drove a taxi for awhile in college. I was always worried about someone pulling a gun and robbing me or worse. I’m in the front, and my fare is in the back out of sight for the most part. Those thoughts ever concern you?

I have a niece just like that. She’s living off her parents in another part of the country. Claims she can’t find a job after 7 months. On her facebook she’s always partying. She has said there are certain jobs she just won’t do. Like working at McD’s...ect. Her father says he’s not going to support her anymore, but, the mom still is. That won’t help her IMHO. Not my kid they can do what they want but, this young lady is 22 years old. Time to cut the cord. She’ll get a job pretty quickly if no one is supporting her.

The young lady like that with whom I'm distantly connected was driven by the Recruiting Office constantly by her father until she caved and joined up. From what I hear, it's been the making of her.

I, myself, said things like “I’ll never touch poop with my hands’, and ‘I’ll never catch vomit to check for blood’...and then I became a mother.

I said things like that when I was in my teens. Then I ended up going to medical school.

I've done things that would make Mike Rowe run away screaming.

Didn't _Resident Obama say the country is back from the brink and there are “Green Shoots” coming up?

Those 'green shoots' are crabgrass.

"Wombats make me kill.
Oh no...they are calling me again."

Y'all be careful out there.

I thought I heard some wombats calling me the other day and, when I went out to kill them, they turned out to be mooses in disguise.

They kicked my a$$.

Darn sneaky ventriloquist mooses ...

“I’ve done things that would make Mike Rowe run away screaming.”

That might not be the best claim to make, given your screen name.

Ewww... Nope.

But that looks like something that will now rank right up there with the human botfly among my parasite phobias.

I’ve pulled those out, too. I just couldn’t find a decent picture of it online. The leech on the eyeball was pretty gross as well.

Now wasn't saying that I don't believe you here...

I really would have accepted all of this without photographic proof...

I'm just glad I checked for replies after lunch.

I had rice noodles, you see...

...I didn't enjoy the original post...

C'mon, admit it! Your response was vague...could have been taken either way and I can't read minds so I had to take a guess.

Anyway, I'm glad you judged the original post as I did. I'll go so far as to say it was offensive.

I look forward to your retraction of your thoughtless "numbnuts" label but I don't expect one.
