Unemployed nephew too good for garbage collection

It gets better. Said unemployeed nephew showed up at our door just over a week ago, after we didn't respond to his email asking if he could come and stay with us while he looked for a job. He drove nearly 1000 miles expecting us to let him sleep in his truck parked on our driveway. Of course, he had a sob story. After a few days of being gone for 2-3 hours each, he's says he's now found a job...we'll see. He's been careful not to expect us to provide coffee, meals, laundry, gas for his truck, etc.

During a discussion with my nephew, a 30-something unemployed laborer, about how we pay to dispose of our trash, he emphatically stated that he would never work collecting garbage, especially not in the summer. The response came automatically without hesitation from my husband: it seems the safety net and minimum wage is too high in our country if we can't find people to do jobs like that. My nephew didn't say anything after that, but I'm sure the truth hurts, especially when it comes from his favourite uncle.

You’re describing New Year’s Eve at my house last time. I’d like to say it was the Macaroni Grill take out...but it’s not.

Yup. Once you’ve been awakened in the middle of the night by a child puking on you, the definition of what is too disgusting changes.

I swore that I would NEVER work at one of the chicken processing plants........well, I don’t have to worry about it, neither one will hire me, and I have applied at both, more than once.

I just got a job at a "quick-service" restaurant. Good luck to ya Gabz.

Leave him out on the curb anyway. Somebody might pick him up.

I am so thankful that you have a family to help you during your time of need, Parsy.

Sometimes life can just fall apart and we need the home town cheer leading squad to step in and ignore our ills, freak out and/or whinning until its better. My sisters could love the spots off a leopard. They can make me laugh through the most horrendous situations. We are fortunate.

Done that.

I think the first time I did one I was 17. At the end of the day I had to undress in the garage - Mom wouldn't even let me in the house wearing those clothes.

I laid cement for a period of time to help a friend starting up his business. Nasty job - even without the crawling into the container and chipping out dry cement business. Poor guy. I hope it paid well!

I let a friend acquaintance who I thought was a friend...

Use the word "friend" sparingly. I know lots of people, I only have a couple friends.

Actually it did ...the job no one else would do paid $30/hour. Not exactly the career change he had in mind, but it kept food on the table.

Didn't _Resident Obama say the country is back from the brink and there are “Green Shoots” coming up? Isn't that Stimulus Plan creating jobs by the boat load?

I know Unemployment is 10%, but I never see it on the Front Page of the local Fish Wrap. Therefore, it can't be as bad as everyone says it is.

I really like that cool new phrase that Obama and his Sycophants use all the time, “Jobs Saved or Created”. Never heard that one before these guys showed up.

I am perplexed. Weren't the Talking Heads in the Media giving President Bush trouble every day when the Unemployment rate was 5.5.% because the Jobs were mostly Service Jobs and not Manufacturing Jobs?

I guess we should all move to Detroit to get some of that Obama Stash Money they're handing out. Who needs a job in a jobless recovery anyway. The President and the Media aren't treating it like a big deal. Just give everyone Unemployment Benefits for the rest of their lives.

Collecting garbage is a good paying union job, paid holidays, great benefits, overtime out the wazoo, and security; the work is never done as long as people throw stuff out. You'd have to know somebody to land that job. (around here, at least) So I can understand why he'll never do that.

In New York City the starting salary of a Sanitation Worker is $31,200 per year with periodic increases to a maximum of $67,141 after 5 1/2 years. This and most other positions in the NYC government are filled through open competitive civil service examinations.

I was 23 years old at the time and I knew him for 5 years. The main reason I did it was for his two young kids, one of which was my God daughter. I did a lot for this kid and never even got a thank you. Beside letting him live rent free for a year I also gave him an account that paid $50k a year for his lawn care business. He screwed that up after three years. There are some people who don't deserve help.

I know two families in similar situations. Both have loser kids and at least one parent that is afraid to let their kids fail. It's so bad, they (parents) are willing to bankrupt themselves because they can't afford their child's lifestyles.

It's one thing to want your child to have it better than you did but I don't understand buying your child a better car than you drive when you can't afford it and they are too spoiled to take their 20-something unemployed butt and cut the grass or run a load of laundry.

P.S. My five year old is currently folding towels. Is that child abuse?
