Easy now. It always help for the opposing team to be playing in their backyards. When was the last bowl game in Big 10 Country? Oh yeah, NEVER! Oh how a playoff system would be great to even things out...

There’s Something Special Happenin’ Here

A team of ‘fate’ playing in black-and-gold?
by Nicholas Richards

EAST LANSING, Mich — Iowa finally found the tonic to their Spartan Stadium Kryptonite. Now, a team of fate looks to be emerging in Iowa City.

With only one timeout left, 70 yards to go, and 90 seconds separating the Hawkeyes from their first loss of the year and the Spartans from the top of the Big Ten standings, Ricky Stanzi drove these Hawkeyes of Destiny to a stunning result, finding Marvin McNutt on fourth-and-goal from the 7 as time expired to give Iowa an amazing 15-13 come-from-behind win over Michigan State. The victory gave Kirk Ferentz his first win at Spartan Stadium, Iowa’s first win at Spartan Stadium since 1995, their 12th-straight win, and their first 8-0 start in school history.

Iowa looked to be on course for their first loss of the year after Kirk Cousins found Blair White wide open on a 30-yard reception with 1:39 remaining to give the Spartans a 13-9 lead, a play that blew open a game that had been dominated by defense and field goals. But the Hawkeyes were helped by clutch throws from Stanzi to both Derrell Johnson-Koulianos and Trey Stross and perhaps a little fate – Michigan State was called for a hold on a Stanzi pass that had been intercepted – to set up the late heroics from Stanzi and McNutt.

McNutt had played very little until the final drive of the game. He caught his only two receptions of the game on the last drive, and he came up with the play of the year, shielding his body from Michigan State cornerback Chris L. Rucker to catch Stanzi’s pass on a slant route in the end zone to set off a wild celebration in the Iowa section of the stadium.

Iowa had fallen behind with 1:39 remaining shortly after taking their first lead of the game with 2:56 left on Daniel Murray’s second 20-yard field goal of the night. The Spartans marched down the field on the back of a clever hook-and-ladder to White to get into Iowa territory. Two plays after the hook-and-ladder trick, Spartan Stadium was rocking, as White was wide-open at the goal line for the go-ahead score.

With their perfect season on the ropes, DJK took the ensuing kickoff to the Iowa 30. Stanzi had to operate without Dace Richardson at guard, who was injured on Iowa’s first possession of the game, and Colin Sandeman, who had been knocked out of the game in the third quarter on a helmet-to-helmet hit.

It didn’t matter to the Iowa signal caller. He calmly picked up completions as he marched Iowa down the field. He hit a big 21-yard strike to Stross on third-and-seven that moved the chains to the Michigan State 31. He found DJK on a curl route that put the ball at the Michigan State 15.

With under 30 seconds remaining, Michigan State looked to have ended matters by picking off a Stanzi fade to DJK near the goal line. However, the Spartans were called for holding DJK, and Iowa had a second life at the Spartan 7.

Stanzi threw toward Moeaki on first-and-goal at the goal line, but Moeaki was double-teamed and the Spartans knocked it down. Stanzi looked toward DJK on second down, but DJK went one way and Stanzi threw another for an incompletion. With time dwindling, the Iowa quarterback looked to Stross on a slant, but the pass was well-defended and knocked away from Stross at the goal line.

The Hawkeyes used their last timeout with two seconds left. Up stepped McNutt. Stanzi delivered the ball where it had to be, and McNutt positioned himself perfectly inside Rucker to snare the pass for the win. By rule, Iowa had to kick the extra point, but instead of risking a blocked point-after, Iowa took a knee to preserve a season of perfection.””

"stink it up"

I guess you're not referring to Wisconsin winning the Rose Bowl in their last three appearances.

Doesn’t the Motor City bowl get played in Detroit :D

Actually, we agree 1,000% A playoff is desperately needed. My vitriol against the Big 10 in that instance is that they are the conference that leads the charge against having one. In fairness, the other conferences don’t seem to want one either, but the Big 10 (led by Ohio State President Gordon Gee) really, really, really wants to keep the status quo.

Well the Big 12 is much better than the Big 10 (and at least the Big 12 is capable of counting correctly). I don’t care if NCAA sports are farm systems for the pros. They’ve been that way long before I was born. I just want them to have a playoff in Division 1 college football like they do for every other sport in college sports.

As for being a “bread and circus” person, I don’t even know what that means. Here’s a tip. When you want to insult someone, try doing something meaningful like making the insult good.
