It’s actually possible that the child did get lost after she ran ahead of her siblings, got into a dumpster when night fell, and was carted off by a trash truck whose driver had no idea there was a child in the dumpster. A number of adults have had near-misses this way, and a few have been killed. And young children tend to sleep much more soundly than adults, and so might very well not wake up when a big truck backs up to their sleeping place (in the case of adults, it generally seems to require drugs and/or alcohol to sleep through the approach of a trash truck).
