Maybe the dog wasn't lost. He might have said to himself..."I have no idea why my people have decided to sleep in the woods when they have a perfectly nice house...but I've about had enough of it. I'm heading home to lay on the couch and watch TV. I may even try to give myself a bath after this debacle."

He was probably 10 miles towards home when they noticed that he was missing!
