Thanks. Good ideas.

Although, as a general rule, in my part of the world when I install an OS, one of the VERY FIRST things I do is to turn file sharing OFF!!!!!
That shoulda been the default, IMHO.

At least if it’s a networked machine.

OK!

Here’s what I got. Took me a bit to get familiar with it and how it handles devices, etc. I am also somewhat sadly disappointed that it has trouble with Norton Ghost images, although that’s probably still something I’m a bit unfamiliar with (at least as far as disk VS partition and whatever control info VMWARE keeps).

Virtual machines defined and operating:

Win XP Home Edition
Win ME
Win 98
Win 95
Win NT 4.0 (don’t ask me why I put this up, I HATE NT, but I had it so what the hey...)
Ubuntu
RH9

I didn’t do WIN2K because I have a couple machines running it, so I know it pretty good already...

Mebbe I should make a WIN 3.1 VM, eh?

I want to install a Ubuntu virtual box on my WindowsXP Pro but I really don’t know where to begin. I think the PC is a Dell Inspiron 530 Core2 with 2_40Ghz and 1066FSB and quadcore with 8MB cache.

I know Ubuntu is free but what virtualization software would you recommend that is free? Are there any tips you would give me? Do you know of a good step-by-step how-to website? Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

What I am using is VMWARE Server 1.0.9

It is about a 150 megabyte download.

Version 2.0 is available, and I have downloaded it, at about 507 Meg, but have yet to test it.

Try it out, if you have any questions, feel free to post them!

VMWare Workstation is free to try for 30 days. With the 30 day trial, you can make your own Ubunto virtual machine.

That same virtual machine will work under VMWare Player under WindowsXP/Windows 7 afterwards.

My recommendation is to first download a free 30 day trial of VMWare Workstation and use that to create the Ubuntu virtual image with the options you want. Once the 30 day free trial ends, you can download the FREE VMWare Player to continue running the Virtual Ubuntu image you created for as long as you like.
