A German shepherd named Taz, who was almost 2 years old when he was assigned from the city police’s K-9 unit to do search and rescue at the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attack, has died.

Taz was the last of the dogs involved in the attacks to still serve on the force. He died of cardiac arrest last Sunday, the Police Department said.

Taz would have been 10 years old on Oct. 31 and had served in the Canine Emergency Service Unit, where his duties consisted of searching for evidence, suspects and missing persons. (The average age of the K-9 dogs is 5 years old, and their working careers generally last 6 to 10 years.)

If your heart breaks into million pieces after 10 or so years, (as mine did after losing my special pup), how do you think you could handle our puppy dogs being with us longer when they go to the rainbow bridge??? We coudln’t handle it. God knows what He is doing...

My boy is over 11 years old. He never did anything as heroic as search and rescue, but it will be a very sad day when he is gone.

Such sad news. I’m so sorry but each and every one of us will see our last day. Taz, rest in peace.

Because while you, I , and most freepers love and care for dogs, there are many pieces of two legged debris who leave dogs tied up to trees with no shelter and give them food and water MOST of the time, but who otherwise pay no attention to them ...There are monsters who enjoy tormenting them sadistically...It is horrible enough reading/hearing about dogs whose life on earth was 8-12 years of suffering and/or neglect, unloved if not outright abused...But if their lives were several DECADES of torment-????? It is intolerable to even THINK of helpless creatures suffering for a human lifespan. No, as much as I love my dogs, I am glad dogs don't live very long on this earth . :-(

(And bear in mind what dogs in moslem countries endure-!)
