Stores, hospitals, entertainment venues, and other places where the public are together in large numbers, use secret codes to pass information between store employees. These are meant to be a secret as they dont want to alarm the non-staff members or alert someone (like a thief) to the fact that they have been noticed. Many stores have their own codes for example WalMart, but there are a number that are nearly universal in application. This is a list of ten secret codes that may prove useful to you in future, or at least dispel any curiosity you may have if you hear them.
10-31 means that a crime is in progress. 10-00 (ten double-zero) means officer down all patrols respond. A code 10 in hospitals can refer to a mass casualty or serious threat. On a ship, a code oscar means someone has gone overboard.

>Leaving out the famous hospital codes calling Dr. Blue >and paging Dr. Fine.
When I was a lab tech the code for fire was “Dr. Red”, followed by the floor location (e.g., “two north).
Hospital I work for has a whole set of codes:
Blue (well known)
Red.. fire
Orange.. bomb threat
silver.. hostage situation or shooter on the loose
yellow.. hazmat spill
etc.
I read about a hospital that used to announce, “Doctor Mortimer Post! Paging Doctor Mortimer Post!” over the PA whenever they had an interesting case in post mortem that doctors might want to check out.
I was just discussing the Elizabeth Smart story and the facts you just gave are depressing.
