I hate to waste a vanity, but I'm just curious to see if I'm alone here, or if my sentiments are shared. I'm seeing more and more links to videos as news sources. I know that I can read several magnitudes faster than I can watch someone speak, so I find it particularly bothersome and never actually watch the video. It's just too slow.
Sometimes the video is all that is available. People can’t transcript video for those with slower internet speed everytime. Most Freepers are really nice and if you ask, they can give you a summary of the video to see if it’s worth your time to go watch it.
I share your sentiment. The only computer I have access to has no sound, so I miss a lot with video.
Searching video is also an issue - at least at the moment.
Sometimes a transcript can’t convey the shock and surprise in the announcers voice when he says “Chicago is out?” “Chicago lost?” Chicago is out?”
Well, hell...next time somebody brings a 'puter to your shop, check for speakers!
I have FIOS which is supposedly one of the fastest connections in the country. I can download a 800mb HD Movie in 4 minutes. It’s the inefficiency of watching as opposed to reading that gets me. I much prefer written information. It’s much faster to absorb, recheck, notate, copy and paste etc etc. For internet purposes, text beats video hands down.
AMEN! Not to mention those of us who are working behind firewalls and can’t follow the video links.
In some cases, the written word just doesn't convey the same impact. That's fine, but don't post it with nothing more than "OMG! You must see this!!!!". Provide a summary of the video, and why you think it's worth viewing.
And if it's just a droning radio monologue, write a transcript or don't bother.
You have my vote. I won’t even bother to watch 99% of them. They frequently have less information than a text article that clears the wire in a few seconds. There are certainly situation where video adds to the experience, like the plane landing on the Hudson, but even so I consider it ancillary. I much prefer to take in the information at my rate, and be able to go back over a sentence or paragraph to see what I missed.
I know there are those who prefer video and I certainly have no problem with seeing them available. It’s really easy to just read the description and move along.
I don’t mind a video but I really do want a fairly complete summary of what I’ll see if I click the link. The same with blogs.
I use a lot of online tutorials for photoshop and photography. I tend to skip the video tutorials in favor of text.
