Three Georgia Tech students were robbed at gunpoint early Friday on a street just off campus, police said.
The students were on Hemphill Avenue between 10th and 14th streets about 12:15 a.m. when they were robbed, according to a crime alert sent out by Georgia Tech police.
"The students stated that two males approached them on foot and pointed a handgun at them," the alert states. "The males demanded the students' belongings before fleeing the area in a black vehicle."
No one was injured during the robbery, which is being investigated by Atlanta police.
The robbers were described as black males, both about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 160 to 170 pounds. The gunman was wearing baggy pants and a long, white t-shirt, while the other man had long dreadlocks and was wearing a black t-shirt and baggy shorts or pants.
The vehicle was described as a black passenger vehicle with round brake lights, possibly a Chevrolet Malibu.
The incident happened in an area just north of the Tech campus where several dozen (my addition) students have been robbed in recent months.
Contrast the effort spent in trying to catch these armed robbers with the effort spent on catching the robbers who killed black low level celebrity, Vernon Forrest, this summer. They went all out until they had the whole crew that robbed and killed him. Message sent to criminals from the Atlanta government: "Rob white students all you want, but don't mess with black celebrities."
Just part of the “redistributive” security force that Obammie the Commie keeps hinting at.
Obamas domestic forces at work.
The mayor's office can spout all the statistics they want about a dropping crime rate, but to long-term residents like me, there's no denying that ATL and many of the close-in suburbs have turned into a zoo in the last 20 years or so.
Bingo. You nailed it! The Tech Campus Police should expand their patrol area, and the Leadership at Tech must take an active role in ensuring the campus AND SURROUNDING AREA are safe.
I've lived here for 35 years.
It's getting worse.
It's getting worse while violent crime stats in many other large cities are going down.
I've stopped going downtown after dark when it's optional.
Yes, but not in the wholesale quantities that they are currently.
A few years back on Ellsworth Industrial (less than 2 miles from Hemphill), someone pulled up in a vehicle and attempted to rob me with a shotgun. After the would-be robber finally left, I called APD to report it, giving them a clear description of the weapon as well as the vehicle and the tag number. To this day, I have never gotten a call back from the Atlanta Police Department.
The Tech Campus Police are not allowed to issue parking tickets in the surrounding area (i.e. off campus). They can only issue parking tickets on campus.
I am surprised that this source was brave enough to actually describe the perp's identity.
This is sort of an oxymoron like "clean coal" or "honest black Democratic politician." If the Tech leadership wanted to keep the students safe, they wouldn't ban concealed carry on campus. They don't really give a crap about the students except in the sense that they always want to have enough of them to keep their taxpayer funded largess coming. If a dozen or two are robbed at gunpoint, what's the worst that will happen from the Tech viewpoint? They'll drop out and they can admit someone else from their waiting list next year. As long as the numbers hold up they don't care.
I had a somewhat similar thing happen about 15 years ago - thank God for firearms. I didn’t even bother to report it (for one thing the vehicle had a hand lettered “tag lost” sign wheere the tag should have been).
