PARIS The French government on Wednesday dropped its public support for Roman Polanski, saying the Oscar-winning director held in Switzerland over a three-decade-old child sex case was not "above the law."
"Roman Polanski is neither above nor beneath the law," said government spokesman Luc Chatel.
"We have a judicial procedure under way, for a serious affair, the rape of a minor, on which the American and Swiss legal systems are doing their job," he told reporters.
He added: "One can understand the emotion that this belated arrest, more than 30 years after the incident, and the method of the arrest, have caused."

Wow, even the French threw him overboard. No harbor for this sinking ship, I hope.
Care to think on the "emotion" caused by the "method" of the CRIME!?
Maybe they actually read what he plead guilty to.
Glad to see the French government can be shamed into something. What an appalling display of indifference to evil this whole episode has made.
“”One can understand the emotion that this belated arrest, more than 30 years after the incident, and the method of the arrest, have caused.”
No, one can’t.
ironically even if he was found innocent for the rape (which he wont be) he will spend the rest of his life in jail for skipping the country in his flight from justice.
A public service ad on the radio today asked, “If you don’t talk to your children about sex, who will?” All I could think of was “Roman Polanski.”
Whoopi is going to be pissed because it wasn’t “rape rape”!
The idiots were so quick to oppose America that they didn’t stop to think about what they oppose. Given a few days to take a look at it and they apparently decided they didn’t need the PR.
Maybe Charlie Manson and Phil Specter can be his cellmates!
I know its been said before, but it’s worth repeating. If Polinski’s name started with “Fr.”, all these hollywood sympathizers would be screaming for blood.
Sounds like Sarkozy and Co. understand Iran and Polanski MUCH better
than the current President of the USA.
How sad.
Oh boy, now what will those Hollyweird sickos who supported this child-rapist do now? Hopefully kill themselves but that’s just me..
"You said 'rape' twice."
Ironically, the arrest would not have been belated if Frech extradition law had turned him over in 1978.
I don’t understand, don’t they watch “The View” over there? Whoopi Goldberg said it wasn’t “rape, rape” and that the case should be dropped. She should know all about dropping, Whoopi, the legal eagle dropped out of high school when she was 14.
Care to think on the “emotion” caused by the “method” of the CRIME!?
I think that is what is starting to sink in with people. The story has always been that Polanski had sex with a minor—statutory rape. The assumption when you hear that is that the minor was a willing participant. Now that the actual details are comming back to light (alcohol, drugs, forced sex, forced sodomy) people are realizing this wasn’t just statutory rape, it was the real thing—violent forced rape.
Yes Whoppi, it was rape rape.
I am not supporting Polanski just stating that this perception of what the original DA did at that time is what allowed him to have avoided extradition all this time.
