I think that is what is starting to sink in with people. The story has always been that Polanski had sex with a minor—statutory rape. The assumption when you hear that is that the minor was a willing participant. Now that the actual details are comming back to light (alcohol, drugs, forced sex, forced sodomy) people are realizing this wasn’t just statutory rape, it was the real thing—violent forced rape.

The original California DA screwed up the case by grandstanding (celebrity trial is seen as a ticket to the big leagues even 30 years ago) and this gave Polanski the excuse and sympathy and support from abroad when he fled.

I am not supporting Polanski just stating that this perception of what the original DA did at that time is what allowed him to have avoided extradition all this time.
