AMD Eyefinity 24 Display Tech Demo On Linux
Phoronix ^ | September 10, 2009 | Michael Larabel

Today AMD issued a press release that they have "demonstrated the PC's next act" with the unveiling of their ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology. This technology, to be found on their next-generation R800 series hardware, allow "up to 12 times 1080p high-definition resolution, which approaches eye-definition optical clarity." Well, what does that mean? Just watch the video below. You may have seen other AMD Eyefinity demos come out today, but the recording below is a Linux-based demo.

These 24 displays (each 1920 x 1200 panels) were powered by four Radeon HD 5800 series GPUs with Ubuntu Linux 9.04 using a pre-production Catalyst driver for Linux. Each of these ATI Radeon HD 5800 graphics cards has support for up to six DisplayPort connections. This video is to serve as a technology demo and this Eyefinity support will in fact not appear within AMD's Catalyst Linux driver for some months. In this recording, the X-Plane 9 flight simulator is being featured, which you can run through the Phoronix Test Suite.

That is danged amazing.

Imagine four machines set up like that. One wall in front, one wall on the left, one wall on the right, one for overhead. Link and sync all four together for your flight simulator or other 1st person gaming...

Just wow.

From the AMD announcement:

AMD Demonstrates the PC's Next Act

*******************************EXCERPT*****************************

ATI Eyefinity technology brings AMD closer to delivering true eye-definition experiences, where the display of a virtual environment is so detailed that it seems optically real to the human eye. Using ATI Eyefinity technology in a single PC, it is now possible to power displays with a combined theoretical resolution of 268 megapixels,2 roughly equivalent to the resolution of a 90 degree arc of what the human eye sees.3 For reference, today's average 19 inch LCD display typically has an image quality of only slightly more than 1 megapixel. 4

And yet no one has been able to get decent flash video playback on Linux, but they can run 24 video displays, and Linux works on machines with an obscene number of CPUs now.

By old, I mean a month... lol

Yes I have.

Though, I am sure this is new news to most here.

I didn’t mean to offend or anything, just sayin.

That’s gonna have a nice price tag....LOL!

Nothing like what a commercial flight simulator costs though. Imagine the kind of experience you could create for ~$25,000! (That's certainly within the budgets of many commercial ventures.)

yes that is a month old.

Just look at the date from that website, and they were not the first to cover it.

Check out this video by the way.

I own stock in AMD, so I think it is awesome that you posted this by the way. I just let my early morning grogginess get in the way of our friendship. lol
