DETROIT (Billboard) - KISS, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, the Hollies, LL Cool J and Jimmy Cliff are first-time contenders for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, organizers said Wednesday.
They join returning candidates ABBA, the Chantels, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, the Stooges and Donna Summer.
Five of the 12 nominees will be chosen for induction from ballots cast by more than 500 music industry voters. An announcement of the inductees is expected in January, and the Hall's 25th annual induction ceremony will take place March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. Broadcast plans have not yet been announced.
Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith told Billboard.com that "it's a real honor to be nominated in our first year of eligibility. Obviously the Hall of Fame has excellent musical taste."
But the year's big story could turn out to be KISS, which has been eligible since 1999 but, like shock-rock predecessor Alice Cooper, has famously been snubbed by the Hall's nominating committee and has made some harsh comments about the organization in the past.

Hollywood Ping
Gene Simmons has no love for the RRHOF.
I thought KISS got into the Hall of Fame back in the mid-80s. Shows how much I (don’t) know.
I’ll go with KISS, Darlene Love, Genesis, Chantels and Jimmy Cliff.
PING
Stooges are about the only ones on this list I give any damn about.
that whole forum has become a joke with Hip Hop included
Rock is dead basically
I must be getting old. But that notwithstanding, the pickings must be slim. Jimmy Cliff, I understand, has a cult following of about half the world's population. Chili Peppers? wuttever. Genesis? Pre-Phil, they were interesting. Hollies had a hit or two. Cool J? puhhhhh-lease.
The Stooges. That’s it.
I tend to agree with the rest of your post, too.
I won’t take this organization seriously until Rush gets in.
the industry might be dead.
But rock and roll can never die.
It's like capitalism, in that sense.
And like capitalism, it is getting a bad name.
Rock is still vibrant, although not the dominant genre anymore.
The R&R HOF has economic considerations here as much as anything, otherwise they wouldn’t continually leave out so many deserving artists and let in several who do not even if they have made worthy contributions to pop music as a whole.
LL Cool J??? How is he even eligible?
It’s been dead since Dirt Nobrain ruined rock.
Wow. Any wonder why the Beatles sold 2.5 million CD’s last month. Geez.
Because they released high quality remasters of all of their albums?

including ironically RHCP
No, just because Sony or somebody released that “Beatles, A Rock Band” interactive product, and the promotion features a bunch of Beatles music being played. Thus reminding America what it was like when a real band was creating real music. Almost as good as Kanye West.
