Excuse me, but I was replying to a request from someone with a problem.
Your like and dislikes are not of interest.
The best solution is changing to a more powerful blog hosting solution. I use a paid blogging service for several sites that has very powerful IP filtering and logging. It costs money, but it is very nice to have every IP logged.
Wordpress, squarespace, and others will make it much easier to deal with trolls and other miscreants.
Is it easy to trace back on AIM?
on AIM I think. any type of java based chat, instant messaging, p2p, there are easy ways to find out the IP. The thing is even a static IP(such as with a cable modem connection), its routed with thousands of other users through one static IP. So the IP could be using thousands of people at the same time. It saves the company money and time to use the same static IP in broadband. There really is no way to find out who in particular is behind that IP. Only the ISP company would know that.
How well does that work?
Some of the hired guns that write the letters to the editor are doctors, professors, etc., to give the letters the appearance of validity.
So the point is that your two trolls will just be replaced by another or more trolls and your fight to ban them will be endless.
I doubt that you will find it to be worth the trouble.
If the trolls are working from their own server, you will find out who they are, but even then they will be replaced with more trolls.
If it is an individual, like me, you will end up with the IP of their ISP server.
In my case, a whosis on my IP takes you to Alltel. Alltel would only divulge my name to someone with a court order. A warrant.
So the best approach is to ignore trolls or go with a blog that requires a sign up with a password, etc. That still does not identify a poster, but it enables that poster to be blocked until he changes his name and signs up again.
Only last night I was reading a post that described how Soros has set up hundreds of blind organizations to write letters to editors, post on the internet, join message boards and be trolls.

bears repeating
Not really.
I addressed the first one improperly and that was just a quick lazy way to make up for it.
I was replying to your double post ;)
The problem with IPs is that if they have a static IP, like myself, then every time they reboot the modem/restart their computer, the IP will change. The first numbers of the IP give their country code... but in order to block their IP, you would have to block the whole country.
Also, you must consider, that they may be hiding behind a rounter... and if they are, there is no way an average citizen or even MOD/ADMIN can track them without bringing in Federal level law enforcement.
oops, a couple of typos.. and the most important one (correction): If they DON’T have a static (I DON’T use a static)..
I run it out of a freeware vmware virtual machine out of Windows XP using the virtual appliance supplied by Incognito.
It works great that way.
Whenever I go to places like reddit.com that I fear being identified, I use Incognito. It's a little slower, but every time you interact with the site you come in through a different apparent IP address.
Makes it very difficult for anybody to track you down. Not impossible, but orders of magnitude more difficult.
