Red's hometown is about an hour south of here. I never get tired of hearing this, and in these times, I believe we all need a little Red.

Neat historical note — at the end, he says “Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: Under God. Wouldn’t it be a pity if someone said that is a prayer, and that would be eliminated from schools, too?”

Another random historical note — I read recently that the Pledge of Allegiance was actually written by a Socialist Baptist minister, Francis Bellamy in 1892.

He also invented a “Bellamy salute” that you were supposed to make when you say the pledge, and it was popular until WWII because it looked too much like the Nazi salute. Creepy pictures here:

I just shared that with my granddaughter. Her middle school class says the pledge every morning and she wants to tell them about this video.

I was so surprised to learn that my grandson who just started kindergarden is learning the words to "Grand Old Flag".
