He was a wonderful American, a great painter, and probably one of the funniest men ever. I recall a skit he did about a ship and there was a block-and-tackle hanging up to the right of the stage just out of reach. Someone had messed up, because each time Red tried to grab it, he couldn’t. Finally, a hand came out and swung it to him. He started that giggle. So he swung it back up where it caught on the hook again. The hand came out again and swung it to him. So he got real close, hooked it a third time and when the hand grabbed it, somehow he grabbed the guy’s hand and pulled him onstage as the audience absolutely cracked up. I’m sure it was a union violation, but funny as heck.

Red Skelton was not only a great comedian, mime and a very funny witty man but he was multi talented, patriotic and believed in God.

I never missed his show and he would always end his shows with the famous, “Good night and may God bless.”

Though I was young when he was around, I’m glad I was old enough to appreciate & enjoy his talent. I loved his comedy. He was a GIANT of a comedian. Shall I say the “John Wayne” of comedy...and a humble patriot.

Today the only way these people can get a laugh is to talk about sex. Guys like Jackie Gleason, Jack Benny, etc really were talented and they didn’t have to go into the gutter to get a laugh.

Never ever liked his humor, but he was true blue and a stand up guy.

I have read they cancelled his program even though his ratings were good. They were going in a new direction.

Best comedy show I have ever seen - late 1980's - Circle Star Theatre, San Carlos, CA. Red Skelton was an amazing talent......and hilariously funny.

There is at least one 'clean' comedian who is in the same genre today - and very popular - check out Brian Reagan:

That is so right. And yeah, some are funny, but it took true talent to be funny without constant references to sex and feces.

When they have documentaries about early days of TV I still laugh at those guys. Even last night on the Emmys I was finding 80 year old Bob Newhart a lot funnier than most of the others who pass as comedians nowadays. Sometimes they could elicit laughs without even saying a word. I am hard pressed to think of one of these people now who do not use a lot of profanities and crude humor.

One of my all-time favorite quotes — attributed to Red Skelton:

“Never mistake kindness for weakness.”

Remember when the cow pooped on live tv during his show? I have that on a tv blooper reel. I believe it was CBS that cancelled his show because it was too patriotic. They cancelled The Smothers Brothers show because it was too radical. Those were the days!

My sister-in-law came to visit us this weekend in Manhattan, Kansas. We took her to K-State Union where several of Skelton's autographed clown paintings hang after he donated them to the university. Of course, she was of the age that the Red Skelton Show was part of her childhood.
