dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 17 September 2009 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

logorrhea \law-guh-REE-uh\, noun
1. Pathologically incoherent, repetitious speech.
2. Incessant or compulsive talkativeness; wearisome volubility.

Example sentences:

By his own measure, he is a man of many contradictions, beginning with the fact that he is famous as a listener but suffers from "a touch of logorrhea." He is so voluble that one wonders how his subjects get a word in edgewise.
-- Mel Gussow, "Listener, Talker, Now Literary Lion: It's Official.", New York Times, June 17, 1997

It's also not good if your date has logorrhea.
-- Monte Williams, "8 Minutes in the Life of a Jewish Single: Not Attracted? Next!", New York Times, March 5, 2000

Mr. King, who possesses an enviable superabundance of imagination, suffers from a less enviable logorrhea.
-- Michele Slung, "Scare Tactics.", New York Times, May 10, 1981

Etymology:
Logorrhea is derived from Greek logos, "word" + rhein, "to flow."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

And if you're up for a little outrage, the crooks are investigating the crooks. I guess Sandy Burglar and the Rodham brothers were busy.

Those deer have been fed by humans for so many generations, and eaten alongside everyone’s penned livestock that they are pretty much omnivorous. They will eat dry cat and dog food, all types of livestock food, but like the sheep and goat cubes best, I am told by neighbors with livestock. They also like to eat wholegrain bread and corn tortillas, any kind of fruit or veggie-and one horse owning neighbor has lost several bales of rather expensive alfalfa to the antlered raiders. I feed them fruit and veggie peelings and leftovers and less-than-fresh veggies and melons gotten free from the farmers’ market, as well as a plastic pail of corn and Purina deer chow every evening.

we have her till five when the first of her friends will show up at the door to claim her....after that her best friends since first grade claims her....we do get her for the wedding. got to buy her a new dress and shoes for the affair.......things have been tight for her so she was more than anxious for mom to rescue her! LOL.....I will have to shop in my closet however. her grandmother’s prize black pearl necklace seems to go with her outfit. might be time to pass them on.

I am more than content right now. Oldest son is snoozing on the sofa, he can’t seem to wake up from the car ride home.

As you know from pictures, Husky girl thinks the deer are larger dogs and plays with them from her side of the fence-and they play back...

Gosh, I haven’t even put bird seed out since the spring. I’m making them fend for themselves until it gets cold.

So does everyone on the road-even in the drought (that seems to be ending now), when most of the deer population has been decimated by it, the deer in this neighborhood are actually almost plump because they have numerous troughs of food and water provided by humans who love to watch them.

I feed the birds and squirrels, too-about 10 lbs. of birdseed a week-watching them through the windows is good and cheap entertainment for the cats and dog, and keeps them from getting bored and tearing around the house making a mess while I’m not home.

Whole grain bread and corn tortillas???? Now that is funny.

I was planning on making tamales today, that should have been made yesterday, but the croaking of my refrigerator has sorta, kinda put the kibosh on kitchen work this week.

As bad as hauling the dead one out this afternoon was, I’m not exactly looking forward to hauling the new one in. coolbreeze is over on Chincoteague right now collecting it and should be home within the hour. Granted he made all the arrangements to get us a fridge, but why he didn’t make any arrangements to have someone (other than me) help him is beyond me.

Gotta love the guy at the county trash place around the corner from us. When he pulled in with the old one in the pickup the county guy told him to take around the other corner to salvage yard because unlike the county site, the salvage yard would give him money for it!! $16.50 is $16.50.

Husky girl is much smarter than Cinderella. Why do I always wind up with dumb dogs?

While we were in the process of hauling the fridge out one of the kittens got in. What a scene that was. When I finally tracked her down I just popped open a screen and dropped her out the window. That was far easier than trying to carry her while climbing over furniture and coolers and getting her past the dog.

I’ve been all withered up with the drought down here. Great word today. Good to read you all again.

Note to Bertram: Eschew logorrhea.
