Check out Thomas Gold's "The Deep Hot Biosphere." He was way ahead of his time, but I think you will be impressed. Here's a "synopsis" from Wired Magazine.

True. But I seem to recall that the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was supposed to only be in service for twenty years or so, at which time it would have exhausted the North Slope's available oil supply. It's been in continuous operation since the mid-seventies, despite tapping numerous new wells, advances in recovery technology, and increased demand.
