The stunning photos from the Hubble Space Telescope released last week by NASA are a vivid reminder of why people on Earth are drawn to — and must continue — the exploration of outer space.
The timing may or may not have been intentional, but the release of the photos came just days after the release of findings by a blue-ribbon panel assigned to review America’s human spaceflight program. Although the panel confirmed that Mars is a most enticing target for space exploration, current financial resources will put such flights out of reach for the foreseeable future.

Even those not interested in space can grasp the idea of holding the high ground.
Private enterprises could do it better than NASA.
Exactly. And there are a number of firms that are proving that every day - Spacex to name one. We are past the Christopher Columbus phase of this and need to get onto a path to regular commercial use of space, rather than a government monopoly. Engineers in our country have enough useful things to do without being given welfare in the form of NASA contracts.
Yeah, maybe ACORN could do it. Hell, they're getting 8 Billion dollars which is almost HALF of NASA's entire 2009 budget.
Keep dreaming. The US taxpayer is so strung up paying so much money to support the bums in this country that there is nothing left for space exploration.

That's exactly the problem. Astronomy like the stunning photos from Hubble are space porn. Instant gratification without actually doing the deed, or the hard work of getting to the point of getting that opportunity.
On the other hand, a government run "space program" is little different than forced prostitution.
Only privately financed, privately built and operated spaceflight is truly earning our way into the conquest of space that will be lasting and rewarding.
Sure you might call me an idealist, but if we treated space development with the respect it deserves, we might get get to see the heavens more than once in a lifetime.
Wrong. We are at the equivalent of having reached the Strait of Gibraltar and have turned back, fearful of risks, expenses, and allowing humanity real freedom.
The Columbus phase may never happen. Private enterprise will not go anywhere until there is money to be made. There is no money in raw exploration.
The only way for nongovernmental project to get off the ground is the formation of some extremely dedicated, well-funded consortium with a lot of first class engineers.
That would be the relatively few “Engineers in our country...” The US only graduates some 60,000 a year now - not enough to keep up with demand. China graduates over 10 X that number and growing every year.
If there was a serious manned space program with all the infrastructure and education needed, there would be a lot (like 100s of thousands) of good paying jobs which workers would spend more and pay more taxes on volume.

I only worked in manned space flight for seven years. You can keep your uninformed opinions. We’re well past the Columbus stage. Time for profits to be made, or not to go at all. I’m done footing the bill for others fantasies.
