Police investigating the slaying of a Yale graduate student zeroed in on a "person of interest" Tuesday after keeping tabs on an ever-tightening circle of people connected to the medical lab where her body was found stuffed behind a wall.
Authorities on the case have been tight-lipped almost since the minute 24-year-old Annie Le was reported missing Sept. 8, just a few days before her wedding day. Police say they have ruled out her fiancee, a Columbia University graduate student, but they have provided little additional informationother than to deny reports that a suspect was in custody.
On Tuesday, investigators descended in large numbers on the home of a Yale animal research technician who lives in an apartment in Middletown, about 20 miles from the New Haven campus. Le worked for a Yale laboratory that conducted experiments on mice, and investigators found her body stuffed in the basement wall of a facility that housed research animals.

When did police reporting go politically correct? What is the difference between a “person of interest” and a “suspect”? Is it a legal thing; i.e. if a suspect is cleared, then he can sue the police, but a person of interest can’t sue, because he was never a suspect in a crime? Anybody know?
While politically correct to some degree, it protects the identity and person of someone not under arrest. This is nothing new. It's just been better applied as police departments become more professional in their handling of cases. "Person of interest" has far more connotations to it than "suspect". Wouldn't an eyewitness be a "person of interest"?
At least they didn’t say he is “helping police with their inquiries.”
I think “person of interest” must mean something like, there is some coincidence in which this guy appears but we really don’t have anything on him.
Yes, such a person would be described thusly. "Person of interest" does not necessarily mean suspect...

If this guy is innocent, it will be a Richard Jewell level screw up. The NY Daily News is running a picture of him dressed as the devil for Halloween last year. Neighbors say his was a angry, controlling guy who screamed at his gf alot. Failed a lie detector test. Scratches on his chest. They saw him pack his bags and split town the day the body was found.
Sounds more like a person of intense interest.
