Apple's IPod and ITunes Updates
PC World (MacWorld?) ^ | 9/9/09 | Christopher Breen

Posted on 09/10/2009 8:06:44 AM PDT by martin_fierro

Wednesday's It's Only Rock & Roll event saw the return of Steve Jobs to the stage, a new version of iTunes with a boatload of features, more-colorful iPod shuffles, faster and higher capacity iPod touches, a video camera-equipped iPod nano, and no Beatles music.

In one of our punchier podcast episodes, I discuss these issues and others with editorial director Jason Snell and senior editors Jonathan Seff and Dan Frakes.

Show Notes

Throughout the podcast we discuss what was announced at the event. Among them:

* iTunes 9;

* a slightly updated iPod touch;

* barely refreshed iPod classics and shuffles; and

* far-more-enhanced iPod nanos.

I had a chance to get my hands on an iPod nano immediately after Apple's presentation. For far more information on everything iPod, visit our iPod topics page.

My IPod touch could use an external keyboard.

You know, kind of like my Palm Tungsten had, oh, 7 or 8 years ago???

..... not that it took Apple a coon’s age to add copy, cut and paste to the IPhone/Ipod Touch system .....

grrrr....

I like the new iTunes. The sharing is great, the new syncing is great, and the several Genius albums that were already there when I opened it perfectly grouped my music.

I’d love to see the statistical model used to derive these albums using the billions of submitted playlists and songs.

I’m a big believer in the market. The fact that there are no external keyboards readily available means not enough people want one to make it worthwhile to manufacture.

However, I have heard you can hack your own. As far as I know there is no serious technical limitation, especially since the Touch/Phone can be made to work with all sorts of custom accessories via the dock.

I’m upset that the green button is now a maximize of sorts instead of switching to the miniplayer like it did before. Trying to get used to using the keyboard shortcut.

Also, what albums are available as LP now? Might be cool to use going forward, it appears Pearl Jam’s new album will be available in the format.

I fear he isn’t long for this world. We were comparing and contrasting Jobs-Gates yesterday in the office. Their mgt style, respective legacies, etc. I think history will view Jobs as the more talented, creative visionary. I suppose I just opened up a can of worms. That’s alright.

“I’m a big believer in the market. The fact that there are no external keyboards readily available means not enough people want one to make it worthwhile to manufacture.”

Why did it take Apple years to provide copy, cut and paste, then?

Also, just because only a small number of people would like an external keyboard, doesn’t mean that even MORE people wouldn’t end up buying it, IF it were available.

Would that be more or less people who have downloaded a Farting App for their IPhone/Ipod?

Also, I cannot be convinced that Apple is not a market-driven company, as much as they want to be a consumer-driving company. They want to call all the shots, I’m convinced.

I’m not sure that will work.

Have you done that?

Why did it take Apple years to provide copy, cut and paste, then?

Initially they hadn't yet figured out a user-friendly way to do it. Remember, with Apple user-friendly takes on a whole new meaning, so they couldn't just slap any old method of cut and paste onto the system.

Also, just because only a small number of people would like an external keyboard, doesn’t mean that even MORE people wouldn’t end up buying it, IF it were available.

Then there's a business opportunity for you. Ain't capitalism great?

Please add me to the iPod ping list.

I have a question: For my brand new iPod that I have yet to start using, if I have a CD I like, can I put songs from it on to the iPod?

Yes, I mean the CDs that I have around here that are mine that have my favorite songs on them. It’s possible to load those on the iPod? I haven’t even plugged it in for the first time yet.
