My toothbrush is still working too. If that is the type of recharger they are discussing, then it is old news.

“I wonder how this will impact pacemakers?”

If the charging systems run at a standard frequency future medical device designs can account for it and filter it out of their monitoring signals. It would be nice to recharge pacemakers and other devices. The batteries could be made smaller and they would last longer so there would be fewer replacement surgeries.

Current designs would likely not be compatible. Interference may confuse internal defibrillators and cause unexpected shocks at inappropriate times.
The leads can act as a large antenna. The energy picked up by the leads can cause heating at the electrodes. How much energy received depends on the power of the transmitter, proximity to the transmitter, and resonant frequency of the lead system.

Current models would probably have to be phased out if wireless recharging became widespread.

Hey twenty some years ago I worked on a project for EPRI where the first guy in charge of it had wasted about two years playing with air core transformer theory. Maybe he should have gone to Braun!

he certainly put a load on the public power...

Ac by it's very nature actually broadcasts some of it's energy away. That's why whenever you listen to the radio it gets static when you go near power lines. You are hearing that energy. If you had some way of picking that up and using it nobody would ever know because that is a loss that is a given

Now that you mention it, the phone in my garage works the same way. Make that work over an inch away and I will be impressed.

I have heard of getting "free" power by induction. I used to get cable TV that way back when I first joined the Navy. It is still not legal.

To my understanding there is energy everywhere, it is what holds atoms together.

Not only that, but even if that energy were at a potential that made it exploitable, it's busy holding the atoms together. Do you really want to use it to run your laptop instead?

Tesla knew how to transmit electrical power without wires and was going to demonstrate it by sending electrical power to Europe without wires. Edison etc put the kabosh on this - affraid the would have a problem billing for energy used. Tesla was technologically way beyond Edison. Tesla was the genius who made Edison look good, and Edison went out of his way to put Tesla down.

Sorry - my mistake. I meant: Tesla

He was known for his theory of wireless energy transfer of power. It stayed theory and Edison won out ...

Just like my firearms, in a well-regulated manner, not like lightning in a thunderstorm.
