I'm obsessed with personal economy. If something is offered for free, my ears perk up, and since metal garbage cans are rarely offered for free, and microwaves are indeed offered regularly, I opt for the microwave. As for effort, the only effort I expend is driving to the offering person's house and picking up the old device from the curb.

Also, they oftentimes get put on the curb during "heavy haul day" so I try to cruise the hood on those days.

If you add up the money you spend on the added driving collecting these microwaves, and assuming (unrealistically) you have unlimited interior storage space for all the unusable volume, I think you’ll still find that a $20 garbage can (assuming you can’t get that for free) is cheaper. Better still, find empty metal paint cans (1 or 5 gal) from a painting company, and you’ll have unlimited free storage.
