By having more plaintiffs on the case, it reduces the incentive for anyone to do her in. Even if she dies, the case goes on. Perhaps the judge was protecting her in more ways than just legal standing.

Furthermore, evidence and discovery is shared among plaintiffs. It would make it harder to destroy crucial evidence by thuggery.
