When my mother first started showing signs of dementia, they asked her who the president of the US was.
Her reply: “I don’t remember but I sure do like his wife, Mrs. Bush.”
So similar to my late Mom's situation. There's some sort of connected disconnect thing going on.
Last year, during neurologist "mini-mental" exams, she'd be asked who was the prez......her answers would vary........but last summer she was asked who was running against Bush she'd say "That damned Clinton-woman"
