Poufed, permed or punctuated with pink and purple spikes, the hair styles of the 1980s exemplified the decade of excess. "It was all about big and extreme," says Snooky Bellomo, who with her sister Tish owns the Manic Panic stores, famous for their line of hair dyes in shades evocative of the Lite-Brite palette.
Now, with miniskirts, leggings and neon fabrics once again wardrobe staples, ready your Aqua Net: Teases, crimps and other stiff coifs are rising up like "Thriller" zombies.
But many other '80s 'dos are no longer don'ts. Here's a look at some of the vintage hair styles, as well as modern interpretations.
The Mullet
Although this, um, business-casual style evolved from cuts of previous decades, fans and members of groups like Guns N' Roses and Quiet Riot ensured the metal mullet?s place as a subcategory of what Linda Wells, Allure magazine?s editor in chief, calls "one of the more memorable and regrettable hairstyles" of the '80s.

These are making a comeback? Dude!
I used to have the 1980s heavily feathered hair with the part in the middle. Now I just have an eight inch part in the middle.
Sigh.
LA Times is only about 3 years late.
Something tells me this will be more women then men sporting this look. Unless metal and arena rock makes a major comeback along with men sporting the Heather Lockler multi layered feathered bangs.
Same with KVs Dad.
He had the most beautiful white blonde hair feathered back.
And that light carmel skin with the blue eyes.
Now just an old bald fart. But then I didnt age well either : )
So the question is, if 2010 fashion is just rehashed 1980 fashion, what will they have to imitate in 2030? Will 2030 fashion just be 1980 version 3.0?
The thing about 60s, 70s, and 80s fashion is that it wasn’t just a rehash. It was its own thing — wasn’t it? or did these periods also draw heavily on earlier periods?
I saw a Miley Cyrus poster the other day and she looked straight out of 1985. In the 70s did they look straight out of 1955? Not that I recall. On the other hand, there was Happy Days and Sha Na Na. And the 80s New Wavers definitely recycled the 60s “skinny tie” look.
So maybe derivative is the norm.
People rehash what they remember of their youth when they are scared. Now we’re scared, and we remember the eighties as a carefree time when we were in the middle of no major wars and most people were very prosperous and secure. It’s natural to want to revisit those times.
Now if only we had a Reagan to complete the picture. . .
