The average life span of the
Bernese has decreased in recent years from 10-12 to 6-8 yrs.. My Border Collie mix ( probably Landseer-Newfoundland) is 16 now. Not old for a Border, but very old for a Landseer.

The short lifespan is the result of breeding in pursuit of the trait of being big to the exclusion of everything else. It's too bad people don't value traits like long life.
Sixteen is very good for a medium sized dog. I know some of the little dogs routinely get to 17. I wish mine did but I'm not a little dog person. My 65lb guy is 12 and he is definitely showing his age.

I love your dogs face. I have never heard of a Landseer-Newfoundland. There is a very famous painter of dogs named Sir Edwin Henry Landseer 1802-1873. I wonder if he had anything to do with the founding of the breed. I am sure you could look him up on line and she his work if you are interested.

Not old for a border? I doubt that. 16 is old for any dog.
