As a former teacher myself, I agree that drinking with students present is not a good idea. There was a bar about two blocks from my school that teachers would go to on Fridays. I joined the festivities one time and was having a libation, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a few of my students outside the window looking at me and the other teachers. They were smiling at us and waving.

That was the last time I drank close to school. It made me feel weird to see the students outside. I couldn't imagine seeing my teachers doing the same when I was younger.

I think it depends on a lot of variables.

A teacher who is friends with the family of a student drinking at a social gathering where the student is present shouldn’t be strictly forbidden. It wouldn’t be a good idea for the teacher to get hammered, but that is true of all the adults there.
