UPDATED: President Obama's Address To Students

President Obama will address the nation’s school children on Tuesday, September 8 at 11 a.m. (cdt). The president’s address will speak to students about the importance of education.

The Allen ISD Learner Services Department has reviewed a summary of the address and feels it is appropriate as part of the school district’s social studies curriculum for grades 4-12.

In order for parents and staff members to view the address first, the program will not be aired live. Instead, it may be used by social studies and government classes beginning Wednesday, September 9.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.

If, after viewing the President’s address, parents do not want their child to participate in this social studies activity, they can write a note to their child's teacher and ask that they be assigned an alternate activity during that time.

Parents who have questions about the address may also view a summary on the U.S. Department of Education website at http://www.ed.gov.

So, if I understand this, a parent must watch the video to get their child excused. Allen,Allen, Allen????? Oh, My....

Hey, now. I live in Allen and we have a pretty stand-up school district. Fortunately, I don’t have young’uns anymore so no worries here.

At least there’s an option? What about yours?

Allen Tx has made their choice. Now its time for the parents to make their voice heard.

If Obama did this every week I guess because he has to read everything off a teleprompter they’d call it “The Weekly Reader”?

I just go this from my kid’s school district, (Lewisville ISDs web site):

Sept. 8 - President Obama’s address to students
In order to not interrupt instructional learning, the District will not be participating in President Obama’s live broadcast on Sept. 8. However, once the speech has been archived, a link will be provided on the District Web site to allow students and their families to access the speech at home.

(I think I’ll pass thank you very much)

Good for them. I suspect that most will offer some “opt-out” scenario... except maybe northern Kalifornia and most of the northeast. :-)

Im in Frisco, Texas. They are not showing it live but also recording it and deciding later if to show any or parts. All I ask, I guess, is to be notified if the decision is made to watch ANY of it. Honestly, if they show to my 4th and 5th grader they better be prepared to take on a “townhall” atmosphere. You would be surprised how much these 4-5 graders know and dislike, lol.

What if your children are conveniently absent the day the speech is aired?

It does sound like parents will be previewing the speech. This is one Allen parent who will not be previewing. Nor will my children be watching it since I don’t have TV.

The way it reads, a parent must watch the video to get their child excused. Indoctrinate the kids—and—the parents!

What if this is shown later, after that you can’t opt out.

Or, it is included at some OTHER time, class, and ... there you are. You can’t take it back out of the kids head.

And what about the socialization that COULD be used against your kid for being ... different? Remember the sex ed classes? How you where to feel SORRY for the poor uneducated kid whose parents don’t want them to know about sex?

Glads, this is so fraught with so many different ways that the schools can use to get to your kids WITHOUT you knowing.
