Thomas Jefferson was the first superintendent of schools in the U.S. Where did you get that information?

In checking this remembered data, I see that his presidency of the school system was for Washington, DC schools, which were regarded as a model during the early days of our society:

Thomas Jefferson supported Bible reading in school; this is proven by his service as the first president of the Washington D. C. public schools, which used the Bible and Watt's Hymns as textbooks for reading.
