I was marginally successful with a similar technique in the early 60’s referring to the Russians and the A-bomb.
Quite a few guys were. There's even a reference to that sort of thing taking place during the Cuban Missile Crisis - in the movie Matinee, I believe (there are other film examples, I'm sure).
