Gennaro Jerry Angiulo, who ruled Bostons Mafia with an iron fist for two decades, died today, sources have confirmed.
Angiulo suffered a broken hip earlier this month while fighting a losing battle with kidney failure.
The ex-gangster was 90 years old.
Angiulo had returned to his compound in Nahant upon his release from prison in 2007 after a 21-year stint behind bars for his 1986 conviction on federal racketeering, loansharking and illegal gambling charges.
The reign of the former New England La Cosa Nostra underboss was ended by his rivals in the South Boston Irish mob, James Whitey Bulger and Stephen The Rifleman Flemmi, who infamously helped the FBI bug the Mafias North End headquarters at 98 Prince St.
Flemmi is today serving life for multiple murders. Bulger, who turns 80 Thursday and is wanted for the serial slayings of 19 men and women, has been a fugitive since 1995. The FBI is offering a $2 million reward for information leading to his capture.
Most Italian mobsters have big, traditional Catholic funerals:

One exception was Tony Galante, who was refused a Catholic funeral Mass by Terence Cardinal Cooke.
More honorable than Ted Kennedy.
from the Wikipedia entry on the Angiulo brothers:
>>Even among organized crime members Gennaro Angiulo was unliked. He was an egomaniac and had his boat “Gennaro” named after himself. He had a habit of referring to Boston Police Department officers as “Irish pieces of s-—”, and he was even more obsessed than most mobsters with possessing money. The FBI had been after him since the early 1960’s when they planted an illegal bug in a bar he owned on Tremont Street. Gennaro Angiulo was granted parole and was released from federal prison on September 14, 2007. He was arrested in 1983 at his North End hangout, then convicted three years later on racketeering charges. Angiulo was brought down after the FBI planted bugging devices in his headquarters, with the help of FBI informants James “Whitey” Bulger and Steven Flemmi.

The Herald reported on Aug 14 that Jerry was “nearing death”
>>Former longtime Boston Mafia godfather Gennaro Jerry Angiulo was near death yesterday from kidney failure, sources told the Herald. The 90-year-old ex-mobster from Nahant has been on weekly dialysis treatments, sources said, and was hospitalized in Lynn where he was surrounded by family. A call to Union Hospital in Lynn last night to check on Angiulos condition was referred to the intensive-care unit. There, a medical official said the hospital was not allowed to discuss patients cases.

LOL! This mobster was an altar boy compared to Teddy and his klan. Let’s hope they are both heaidng to Dante’s Inferno.
Howie Carr has referred to Teddy’s clan as “The Kennedy Crime Family” :)
Rac,
Although Jerry Angiulo was first listed on Howie Carr’s 18 August 2009 Death Pool...the only winner was the person who picked Teddy K.....I don’t think there’s more than a single winner for every pool. I supppose Howie will do another pool Monday or Tuesday...haven’t heard one way or the other.
It is important to note that Bush Senior (41) was too frail to attend Kennedy’s Memorial service.
Anyway, for those who missed it, here (once again), is the Howie Carr Show 8-18-2009 Death Pool:

I missed the last one. Someone picked Howie? What was his reaction?
Woot!
Being 3rd generation Italian descent I say pox on all mafioso and spit on their murderous, criminal deeds. They are the scumbuckets of Italian blood.....Tasbards all...
Wow, two prominent figures in Boston crime families dead in one week.
Oops - sorry Jerry for lumping you in with “Uncle Ted”.
Perhaps you have to be Roman Catholic to understand how such people as mobsters receive traditional Catholic funerals. Looking from the outside in, it sends a confusing message. It can be interpreted in such a way that repentance is not required. God shows no partiality, but it has the appearance that if one is rich and powerful, he doesn’t have to worry about repentance.
What does that tell you?
Will he be getting full-on press coverage for his funeral and burial ? At least he’s a tad more respectable than a certain other fella...
Tells me I should get busy whoring.
