Need computer help: Userinit.exe unable to locate dll
Vanity | 8-29-2009 | Frantzie

Posted on 08/29/2009 11:40:44 AM PDT by Frantzie

Sorry to clog the board with a vanity but I have a problem. It is an extra older machine running Windows 2000 Professional. Our office had power problems and I did not have it on a power backup and it lost power.

Hey, TomGuy, thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.

Any more tips out there?

I have some older software that works on Vista Home Basic

If it works in VISTA.. then it will definitely work on Win7... Win7 is MUCH more user friendly than Vista.

It works fine with all earlier versions of Windows.

The biggest problem is the security, starting with VISTA... If the maker of the software didn't pay a licensing fee to M$, then their software/code was not included... meaning that some (much) software will not be able to run. BUT, if it worked in VISTA, then it will work in Win7... 1 MAJOR free application I miss is sandboxie: Sandboxie

It was (is) one of the best ways to test a program, whether virus/trojan infested or not (and a good way to SEE if a program is infected..) until x64 came along... To make a long story short on that application... anything that happened inside the sandbox... NEVER excaped... no registry writes... no infection (outside the box)... literally. The supposed infector program would THINK it did its job... but it was all, literally, in a virtual world inside your PC.
nevermind.. just trying to make a point that I can't remember what it was now... 10:30am here now, .. so I have been up for around 26 hours. Trying to get back on a normal schedule before school starts :p

sorry.. dunno where in the code I screwed up to get such a funky setup (this post)... but too tired to look through it all.. and I am sure you will understand whatever I said ;)

I think when I first installed Win7 RC it took up about 14 GB of space on the drive.

I haven't had any problems running XP programs on the Win7 machine. Have you? Other folks have asked.

XP progs on Win7? not yet. XP was a b!tch to install because of the lack of drivers... as well as, if not more so, Vista. In my opinion, Vista was the beta for Win7... Win 7 is more stable than ANY M$ OS after DOS (btw, I still prefer DOS... but nothing is DOS compatible anymore :/)

The main thing with Win 7, as you probably know since you are also using it, is the licensing pain in the butt (VISTA was the start of that pain... so if it works on Vista.. it works better on Win7).. There are ways around that.. but not something a I discuss here on FR.. also depends much on whether whichever application you’re talking about is x86 or x64 (in my case at least... I’m running x64... AMD quad..)

Just for chuckles and grins, I ran a QuickBasic program (DOS) on my Win7 box. Ran just fine in the shrunken window just like on XP. So yeah, it will do DOS.

BTW, I see that M$ has put an “uninstalling RC” link on their Win7 main page. Have to look at that before October 22. Yes, I bought the $49 upgrade.

Uninstall for RC? I will prolly use it.. or just reformat.... like I said here, or some other piost yesterday; this will be the first OS I pay for since Win98.. well worth it.
BTW, night :) (or afternoon, in my case.. 12’55pm here) sdfwg34tegfsd asdf <-— my mind now... slinking off to bed

Hey, while we have a computer thread, what do folks recommend for home budgeting and financial record keeping? Money? Quicken? Or what? Thanks.

Try GnuCash. Open Source... Free to dld and use. Excellent, excellent, if you can get bookkeeper/tax prof.s who will work with you with it.

What the heck is up with FaceBook? Makes me want to say F*** it.

Make certain you have the newest version(s) of Sun Java and Adobe Flash installed (both readily available at filehippo.com). Adobe Flash takes two separate installers, one for Firefox, another for IE...

I had recent complaints from customers, and these seem to do the trick (dunno which particularly).

Frantzie, I am not familiar with that driver- Is it possible that this box has contracted a virus, or that your anti-virus had recently removed the .dll as viral, but failed to remove it from startup?

What anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-trojan stuff is onboard? Do you have any means of getting at startup items in order to shut them off?

I think roamer is on the right track, but I suspect a failed install of malware. Google has no hits on MSVYKJ.DLL (other than this thread), making me think it is random generated name (typical malware behavior).

Now how to check for malware may be a problem. Since you can get to task manger, can you just run command from there to get the desktop? I suggest running Malwarebytes if you can figure out how to download it.

Thanks and good suggestions for both of you. I am on it. I was able to launch MB screener and I am scanning now. I will let you know.
