Need computer help: Userinit.exe unable to locate dll
Vanity | 8-29-2009 | Frantzie

Sorry to clog the board with a vanity but I have a problem. It is an extra older machine running Windows 2000 Professional. Our office had power problems and I did not have it on a power backup and it lost power.

I can access everything through Task Manager by Browse but my desktop is gone.

I wonder if that free Linux utility will work? I wonder if there is any freeware. I have to keep looking for a 2000 ROM I may have.

Usually F8... sometimes F4 (older systems...)... ESC (for many laptops) and DEL (for most desktops) puts you in BIOS/CMOS settings.. wouldn’t help in that case :(

Ok.. I have been holding back hoping that someone else could help you out... I don’t have much experience with Win2000... but the simplest solution was mentioned earlier (the only mistake was of mentioning XP instead of 2000... but it’s still the same). If you can get the 2000 installation disk, put it in and boot from it. while it is booting (even on P4s) it should give you the option to boot from the CD/DVD. Take the boot from CD/DVD option and it should give you further options (like I said.. my memory on 2000 is very vague... was about 8 years ago last time I used it)..

It should start loading drivers and such.. just wait for the options to show up.

One of the options should be to repair the system files (may ask for an admin password.. just hit ENTER).

The original disk SHOULD then check and compare the files on the boot hard drive and replace any files it deams corrupt.

2 things though...

1: You will have to reinstall any and all updated drivers (and necessary applications... they will still be on the HD, but the system, more or less, resets everything.)

2: If/when you get to the control prompt (DOS prompt), it probably will not give you access to or recognize all drives (for example, the CD/DVD drive)... or it will, but it will not have the same drive path you are used to (unless you have 1 HD and 1 CD/DVD... C:/D: respectively)

I really wish I could help you further, but I can’t remember the exact logon for 2000. IF you have, or able to upgrade to, at least 1 gig of RAM on the P4... you should definitely get the latest BETA of Win7 and install it. It has the most drivers available of ANY Winblows system and installs in less than 15 minutes (for me anyway..).

Thanks. Trying to find the Windows 2000 Pro CD ROM. I can get things working but the desktop is lost.

It is a P4 with 1 Gig of RAM. Should I go to MSFT and install the Wiundows 7 Beta? Will it fix the dlls? Will it die at some point as it is a beta? Thanks.

FireFox

This was originally Netscape... but Netscape fell and Mozilla took over. My first internet browser WAS Netscape (1995?!)

Yes to both... I am a BETA tester of the new Win7... and it has never been easier to install a Operating System on a Win machine... being a P4, it may take longer than a newer system.. but the drivers are all pretty much there. This is the first OS I have installed that DIDN't give me driver problems. (but you need probably a HD larger than 4 gig.. :/)

OH.. 1 more thing... if you install a OS, but you still have files you need or want on your previous system, you need to use your back up 'box' to store them on. The best installation is always a FRESH installation. (of course, you can't upgrade 2000 to Win7.. but the same rule applies).

Darn... looks like Win7 stopped the download capability.. :/ You could pirate in from The Pirate Bay or Demonoid (torrent sites)... but the actual OS is listed as coming out October 22nd, not that I would rely on that date... plus it's another month and a half away..
I would send you a copy of the ISO (file format of the DVD), but I'm not sure my key is usable to more than 1 person :/
I will say that Win 7 will be the first OS I pay money for since '98 (small exception is XP x64 Japanese.. because I needed a Japanese version at the time)..

You are most welcome. I run both. Somethings I like in IE better and ditto for Firefox.

BTW, if you are able to find the original Win2000 Pro CD and do a repair... make sure you have all of the drivers handy (motherboard, HD, audio, video, net, monitor, CD/DVD, and I am sure there are more.. those were off the top of my head for a P4...

I build my own systems and haven’t “bought” a PC for the last 15 years.. was cheaper back then to build your own (by about 15-25% of the cost of a store bought unit))..

1 more important thing to you... if you download firefox... make sure to download the addon ADBLOCK' All related AdBlock filters...

This will cut out about 95% (or so) advertisements from websites...
It is rare that I get an advertisement anymore..

Naw, he’s right.

I used to work in IT and I was in a very small minority there as a ‘God-fearing’ conservative.

They’re too smarty pants for their own good. I worked at a public institution though, so take that for what it’s worth.

Glad I left...

Honestly...
from past experience...
Stay away from social networking sites...

Not only are there loonies out there (I have been stalked physically 3 times.. thank God they were women and not... well, you know)...

BUT those social networking sites also have been ‘hacked’/hijacked by arseholes that want to control as many PCs as they can (script kiddies) (making innocent people’s PCs their BOTs).

(P.S.) DON’T use wireless unless you know really well how to make your network secure...

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve been very careful when I use the laptop. The others are DSL
PC macines I use at home. I guess you’re right, those sites can be pretty dangerous.

Thanks TPD

I'm not going to waste your time by suggesting that you buy a Mac or a Linux or a new machine. You just want to fix the one you have, right?

Re Win7: The Win7 Beta expired in June so no go there. The Win7 Release Candidate (RC) will be good unrestricted to March 2010 and between then and July will shut down every hour and you'll have to reboot. And Win7 wants 20 GB of HDD space and a 128KB video memory and would like to see 512K RAM. Based on my experience, if you can meet the 128KB and the 20 GB restrictions, your P4 2 GHz machine would be happy running Win7 even if the RAM is shy. After all, it's not the resource-hungry Vista. But only till July! If you still want to install the Win7 RC, get the 32-bit version because they didn't have 64-bit machines when they were installing Win2K. The Win7 Home Premium Edition (available in October) is $119 list.

Like poster #24, I think you may have mistranscribed the DLL file name. Please recheck it. Then Google the file name to locate a copy and to find out where it goes in the operating system without needing an install CD. But your best bet is to locate your install CD. Then you can fix the file problem using procedures some posters have suggested. So please keep looking for it.

Bikkuri, you can find free Win7 RC code keys here. I know they work cause that's what I used to activate my machine.

In my experience, the only parts you may need to find drivers for are the video system, the audio system, and the network card. But if you can get the network card or modem driver working, you can get the rest from the 'Net if need be.

Thanks. It is working and I can get to stuff using Task Manager to launch IE or other programs but it is a pain. I will search for W2K in the AM. I will also get the dll file name in the AM. Thanks.

Speaking of Windows 7. I heard the higher end versions will have XP emulation. WIll the lower end versions have it too??

Well, at least you aren't dead in the water with the Win2K.

When I heard about the XP emulation feature, I checked into it. The emulation feature is available on the Pro and higher versions, but not the Basic or Home Premium.

Here's the catch: In order to use XP emulation, your processor has to have a "hardware virtualization" capability. Processors more than two years old don't generally have this and not all newer processors have it either. Microsoft has two virtualization check utilities, one for Intel chips and one for AMD chips.

Question is, do you need XP emulation? I haven't found any Windows programs that work in XP but won't work in Win7. But there may be some older programs out there that refuse to get along with Win7.

Go to microsoft.com/windows7 to check the features of the different Win7 editions. Frankly, considering the extra cost of the Pro and Ultimate versions, IMHO they're not worth the extra bucks.

Another feature you may have heard about in Vista and Win7 is the "Aero" visual display. This is basically semi-transparent windows when you have one stacked up over another. My machine does not have the graphics capability for Aero but I don't miss it. Any new machine you get will probably support Aero.

I have some older software that works on Vista Home Basic but not the higher end versions. It works fine with all earlier versions of Windows. I wonder if they will work on Windows 7? This is why I am asking about XP emulation.

Thanks for the info bro :) but M$ already sent me a Key... and I have the RC Win7 (good until July of 2010 (damn, even typing that year makes me feel old :( .. ) not even very old yet :p

You may be close (but not quite correct) of the 20gig HD... just checked my system HD(s) (2 teras here.. 5 internal and 3 external) and Win7 used about 15 gig (I do stand corrected there..) Is a pain in the butt keeping up with all the OSs... have XP x86-ENG (English); XP x86 JAP (obvious, Japanese); XP x64 ENG, XP x64 JAP;..... wiped my Vista HD clean to install WIN7 (x64). (BTW, all XP are Pro.. Home didn’t give the the flexibility I needed.... :/).
