Danville, VA-- Wednesday morning, Danville Police responded to the intersection of Kinzer Avenue and Central Street in reference to a pit bull dog chasing children who were at a school bus stop. Responding officers did not locate the dog.
An hour or so later at 8:22am, Danville Police were again dispatched to the same location about a pit bull chasing people down the street. Officers arrived and found the dog running loose and learned that a neighbor had already used pepper spray on the dog. The dog approached one of the responding officers aggressively, but the officer was able to coax it to its chain behind a home on Kinzer Avenue. There were three other pit bulls chained up behind the house.
As the officers were leaving, the dog broke away from his chain and attacked one of the chained pit bulls. The officers used pepper spray to stop the attack. The dog charged the officer, but then ran away. A family member arrived and volunteered to retrieve the dog. Before he could capture the dog, it attacked another of the chained pit bulls. The family member could not separate the two dogs. Both dogs were then tased by officers, which provided the opportunity to attach a catchpole to the aggressive dog and drag him out of range of the chained dog.
The chained dog immediately recovered from being tased, but the aggressive dog died within seconds. The Danville Area Humane Society arrived on the scene and seized two of the chained pit bull dogs. The third chained dog was taken by a family member to receive treatment for its wounds.
The owner of the dogs, Derrick Peatross, was charged with four counts of having an unlicensed dog and three counts of having an unvaccinated dog.
WTF??? How does any member of this family get left in charge of taking any of these dogs for treatment?
Why did they not just shoot the damn dogs, and the stupid owner, too.
How about requiring pitbull owners to post serious bond?
Chained dogs. That’s pretty high up there on the list of things you should do to get an undersocialized, aggressive dog. Shame on the owners. How many dogs did they have chained up? Seems to me these were definitely not pets.
