President Barack Obama praised Edward Kennedy’s ideas, ideals and courage in the face of illness, saying the liberal icon, who lost his fight with cancer late Tuesday, was one of the greatest senators of modern time and “one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy.”
“His extraordinary life on this earth has come to an end, the extraordinary good that he did lives on,” Obama said in remarks from Oak Bluffs, Mass., where he is vacationing with his family. “For his family, he was a guardian, for America he was a defender of a dream.”
Kennedy, an early backer of Obama’s run for the White House and a crucial ally in the president’s push for a health-care overhaul, died in his home in Hyannis Port, Mass., more than a year after being diagnosed with brain cancer.
Obama, who spoke early Wednesday with Kennedy’s wife Vicki, said his thoughts and prayers are with the late senator’s family.
“His fight has given us the opportunity we were denied when his brothers John and Robert were taken from us: the blessing of time to say thank you and goodbye,” Obama said. “The outpouring of love, gratitude and fond memories to which we’ve all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in American history touched so many lives.”
