No surfing allowed at Sandy Hook because of threat of rip current

The National Park Service issued a "no water entry" order for Sandy Hook Saturday and Sunday, forbidding bathers and surfers alike from entering the water, fearing they could be swept away by rip currents formed by Hurricane Bill. Surfers, who are often exempt when bathing is prohibited due to high surf conditions in other parts of New Jersey, were surprised and frustrated.

This stinks, surfers and body surfers look forward to waves like these. Usually the federal parks allow people to ride waves during these storms.

Ridiculous.. They should just post a “surf at your own risk” sign.

With the storm surge the waves in Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach were probably breaking on the sea walls. I suppose you could keep heading south. Is west end beach (Long Branch) still a surfing beach or did they sell that off for condos and homes too?

Back when I lived at the shore it was nearly impossible to get out to the north end of Sandy Hook. I heard the waves had nice form, when there was a swell, even though I never had the chance to experience them for myself.

It was 6’ in Florida and good in some spots. No Surfing because the surf is up. Shows how perverted the government at all levels has become.

Here’s my only Dept. of the Inferior joke about surf and Ranger randy.

Ranger randy gets promoted to Stupidvisor of SealsRUs National Park. On his first day in the office he looks out of the window onto the surf. Suddenly, he notices something out in the surf zone and runs out to get a closer look.

Hearing barking, he immediately starts to strip his uniform off to swim out for the rescue. As he is removing his shoes a hippy comes jogging by and asks what he is doing.

“I’m going to rescue that dog, says Randy.

The hippy said, “You are new here, aren’t you?”

Randy says, “I’m from Alabama.”

And the hippy said, “They must not have seals in Alabama”, and jogs into the distance.

But for surfers who know how to use them safely enough, riptides are very nice for getting out behind the waves. ;-)

[Reminiscing about teen years near the Island.]

...twelve-footers way ahead of a tropical storm once. They were smooth for less than half an hour, then too choppy to ride.
