Capitalism is the best way for an established society of civilians. That said, the situation for initial governance of the Mayflower Separatists was more congruent with that of our military forces. And not surprisingly, they did far better than the first boatloads of Cavaliers to the south.

William Bradford wrote about his "experiment" with socialism then in his journal, "Of Plymouth Plantation". Check it out sometime in a library or get it on Amazon.
