I’m not conflicted. Much like the Yankees who steal everyone else’s star players, we the US should go about stealing everyone else’s star students.

I would like to have merit scholarships given to a whole bunch of top rated foreign and/or domestic students. We want those people here.

A lot of the low level laborers we can do without.

I don’t have sympathy for people who are here breaking our immigration laws like they don’t exist.

I don’t go to other foreign countries and break their visa/entry laws. They have no problem doing it here though. And we have too many internal treasonous bastards who give them aid and comfort to these people.

If they are a genuine hardship case apply for asylum. We make exceptions for such things. But other than that I would just as soon save the sob story.

Get a load of this:

(Excerpts)

Six months after I was born, my family emigrated from Mexico to Los Angeles illegally—with little more than one suitcase but great hopes for the future. My parents wanted to give their two daughters opportunities that weren’t available back home.

...

Every activity allowed me to cling to some sense of normalcy in a life that was changing. My parents’ marriage had begun to crumble, slowly and painfully. I had to learn to stand on my own, to be accountable to myself. School felt safe, and I was fortunate to have a support system in a special program for economically disadvantaged students who hoped to attend college. Every student in the program had a story of hardship, so I no longer felt quite so alone and isolated in my struggle.

...

Surprisingly, I found time to make friends and, perhaps more surprisingly, mostly with political conservatives. They proved to be remarkably open-minded, and I loved their outlandish conversations and unabashed candor.

...

Conservatives do not agree with coming to our country ILLEGALLY and looking for LEGAL folks to “bail them out” because their “dream” is not going to happen.

I can’t get out my violin for this sob story. Too often this is true of LEGAL American kids.

When I was at Berkeley, everyone was stone broke and worked a lot. Many had come after 2 years at a Jr. College. Your point might be??

I’ve been expecting stories like these to show up in the MSM. After all, didn’t O promise access to college for everyone? For free? It’s about time he started keeping his promises! /sarc.

Berkley {sic} still has QUOTAS and they screen OUT the cream of the crop that is LEGAL, WHITE or ASIAN.

No, that is simply not true.

“There is absolutely no ceiling for any type of student based on ethnicity—either in policy or in practice,” Assistant Vice Chancellor and Director of Undergraduate Admissions for UC Berkeley Walter Robinson said.

Thank You and have a nice day.

It’s California. I’d bet my shoe collection that she is only paying in-state tuition. Still, it’s a University and more expensive than the State Colleges for anyone who attends. We don’t GIVE that away, nor should we.

I bet they don’t ask citizenship status for merit scholarships, either, in Kalifornia. There are so many ways to push past obstacles. And not every student is off to a fancy University as a freshman.

Yes, California is just like Texas where Illegal Aliens pay in-state tuition.

UC tried that, and it has been a resounding failure. It is undoubtedly still going on though. What happened was that their less qualified Affirmative Action students dropped out, leaving significant numbers of empty slots among the upper classes. I think total number of graduates dropped, while the number of minority (Asians aren’t considered a minority in the UC system, because they are over-represented) graduates stayed the same. Therefore, the program was a success, since the % of minority graduates rose.....

“All those activities should require SSN verification and legal status.”

If you don’t need it to become POTUS, why do you need it to be a student or sell jewelry in a mall?

UC does not use race or ethnicity in their application process.

“The kid apparently has better academic aptitude than 99% of the American kids his age.”

Then he probably has less of a need than other people to bother with college.

There are 100 million Chinese children eager to attend college in the USA.

Maybe if we would just let this chick graduate, she could get a good job and pay for the college educations of those 100 million Chinese eager to follow her path.

Hopefully, with his Newsweek piece, Mr. Gonzalez will find private donors that would be willing to contribute to his Berkeley education fund so that he can pursue the education that he has worked towards.

Or he can get real and notice that the cost of a Berkeley education is way beyond the reach of many Americans; legal Americans that manage to get themseleves just as good, or surperior educations at places like their community college, for far less money.

She was brought here too young to make a decision about her origins. That was then. This is now.

She can't decide whether she wants to be a champion or a victim. The essay suggests she may be opting for the life a victim. What a waste. If she continues down that road, her only worth will be as a captive vote for the Democrat Party (after Obama legalizes her).

A champion would never whine. A champion would seize the moment, persevere against adversity, accept complete responsibility, make no excuses, and quietly triumph. A champion would repudiate liberalism and become a model conservative.

No doubt a more highly qualified but legal resident of Asian origin was sidetracked into USC or something to make way for this illegal alien.

There is a feeling in California among some groups that Berkely has entirely too many Asians.

First of all, I don’t believe for a minute that this girl could not have gotten a full scholarship to almost any college or university in the country, just for being an Hispanic girl with relatively good grades because I have seen it happen.

Second of all, does she think that she is underprivileged because she has to work to put herself through school? I know a doctor who made all of his kids pay for their own college and he would pay for their graduate school. I didn’t have anyone to pay for may college and I managed. People do it.
