A grand jury has indicted Sunday school teacher Melissa Huckaby on charges she kidnapped, raped and killed 8-year-old Tracy resident Sandra Cantu and drugged two other people.
Huckaby, 28, broke down in tears as Judge Linda Lofthus read the five-count indictment against her Monday. You can read the indictment for yourself here.
Huckaby also appeared to have two cuts above her right eye, but it was not immediately clear how those injuries occurred.
Cantu's disappearance from a trailer park, the discovery of her body and the child's funeral drew national media attention.
Prosecutors convened a grand jury in late July rather than hold a preliminary hearing to determine whether Huckaby would stand trial. A trial date has not been set. A prosecutor said a determination on whether to seek the death penalty will be made in the next 60 days or so. Huckaby previously pleaded not guilty to murdering Cantu, whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase pulled from an irrigation pond north of Tracy in April.
Huckaby also pleaded not guilty to charges drugging a 7-year-old girl as well as a 37-year-old man, whom police believe she had dated.
Huckaby is being held without bail.
No, you idiot. When people like me end up on a jury we take our job seriously, including the legal presumption of innocence. I can make all the assumptions and snide comments I want now precisely because I’m NOT on a jury and my actions have no effect on the case.
Oh well you called me an idiot, I guess you win the argument.
*********************
You're right. Calling you an idiot wasn't necessary to win the argument. Though correct, it was superfluous.
...beyond a shadow of a doubt
Stating that it is unwise to jump to a conclusion without all the facts does not in fact make me an idiot. Your position that you can just decide what the truth is because you can have an opinion is just like Obama saying the cop was stupid. Try that one on for size.
...with a .45 round.
Brilliant! You do have a way with words.
That wasn't why I called you an idiot. I called you an idiot because you jumped to the conclusion that I am incapable of acting impartially when the situation requires it, just because I chose not to act impartially when the situation did not require it.
When you drop the argument and make personal attacks, sometimes you get called an idiot.
I did not jump to a conclusion that you were incapable of being impartial on a jury, I was saying that people in general who jump to conclusions (such as you in this case and such as Obama with the cop thing) do more harm than good. This would include people who are on a jury and jump to a conclusion without all the facts. I did not personally attack you at all, yet you attacked me, which it clearly states in the composition page to not do. Let me help you out: “Please: NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.” You may stop projecting your faults on to me at any time.
You said that people like me are the reason innocent people go to jail - which is exactly saying that I'm incapable of being impartial on a jury. That's also an attack, and a false one, but I have thick skin so I'm not all that worried about it. I only brought it up because you were whining about being called an idiot; in my view such turnabout is fair play.
I was saying that people in general who jump to conclusions (such as you in this case and such as Obama with the cop thing) do more harm than good.
You said nothing of the kind; if that's all you meant you had a strange way of saying it.
Let me help you out: Please: NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.
OK so hit abuse; good luck with that.
You may stop projecting your faults on to me at any time.
That doesn't even make sense, but OK.
I believe this woman is innocent. I believe they should question the man who accused her of drugging him. It’s just a feeling I have. I think she is being framed by someone, either at the trailer park or in her church.
I neither know, like, nor do I dislike Melissa Huckaby, it’s just a feeling I have and feelings of mine are often correct.\
I think and feel in my heart that she’s innocent.
