A Muslim French woman was banned from wearing a "burkini" in a public pool in Emerainville, near Paris, for hygienic reasons, officials said.
The Daily Mail reported Wednesday that the woman, a 35-year-old convert to Islam identified only as Carole, bought a season's pass to the pool for herself and her children, but was asked to leave after attending several times.
The newspaper said the burkini, purchased in Dubai, was designed for women who subscribe to Islam's modesty recommendations. It is comprised of a head covering, leggings, and a long-sleeved tunic.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said burkas should be banned.
"This hasn't anything to do with segregation. It's simply a hygiene problem," said Yannick Decompois, swimming pools director for the Marne-la-Vallee area where Emerainville is located. "We also ban people wearing shorts in pools -- it's the same thing."
Carole says she feels discriminated against and will take up the matter with anti-racism groups. If she doesn't prevail, she will leave the country, the newspaper reported.
Islam is not a race, its a religion. So how can a French woman claim racism when other French people are rude to her? Isn’t rude the definition of being French? Or was that cowardly??
You can say what you want about the French, but here in the States there would not be one pool manager daring to ban the burkini. The ACLU would be on him like flies on stink.
Looks utterly ridiculous.
Well, the hygene could be reflected upon the pool’s water chemistry.
Wearing ‘full clothing’ not only brings in volumes more of detergent residue (phospates); but pockets can carry all kinds of things damaging to a pools skimmer/return lines or vinyl liner (if not concrete). That, plus ‘flowing’ garments could lead to safety issues even with drain/suction updates (do they even have those outside the US?)
The Paris pool manager is quite correct.
but here in the States there would not be one pool manager daring to ban the burkini
.
YMCA, only it was their street clothes.....
The floss that passes for bathing suits at the beaches and pools these days bring their own set of hazards. Whiplash for instance and the resulting injury when my wife returns my head in her direction.
Is that John Kerry at NASA?
Looks like a smurf
Interesting. Thanks for posting. GO SARKO!
She’s showing her ankles! Stone her!
Have seen those, and even what I would call a light-weight full-body wet suit at the local water park. The poor girl wearing the later looked like she would die of heat stroke that day...
I am all for modesty... but come on.
And her face. Don’t forget the face is uncovered.
