An iconic child (now teen) star performs a pole dance at an awards show aimed at teens. Most of the media shrug. Welcome to Hollywood 2009.
At the Teen Choice Awards, which took place Aug. 9 and aired Aug. 10 on Fox, Miley Cyrus, the 16-year-old Disney-created star of the wildly popular “Hannah Montana,” franchise performed “Party in the U.S.A.” Clad in short-shorts, high-heeled boots and a tank top that revealed a black bra, Cyrus danced around a pole affixed to the top of an ice cream cart.
Admittedly, the pole moves were a small portion of her performance, but it raised the question of whether a pole belongs in any dance choreographed for a 16-year-old performing for others her age.
Cyrus’ stunt, clearly designed to push decency boundaries without actually crossing them, looked more appropriate for MTV’s Video Music Awards than for a show that sought the input of kids as young as 13.
Even Entertainment Weekly and the Los Angeles Times, not exactly prudes, thought Cyrus crossed the line. EW’s Tim Stack wrote, Cyrus’ “stripper-esque choreography, coupled with [her] questionable red-carpet attire, came off completely inappropriate and ill-advised.” The Los Angeles Times’ entertainment blog read, “Miley goes to far (and too low)” and advised the young singer to “focus less on her props and more on her material.” Even MTV’s “Hollywood Crush” blog questioned the appropriateness of Cyrus’ performance.

Anyone who thinks so did not see the Miley Cyrus video in question and/or has never witnessed an actual pole dance.
Miley Cyrus is following the path of Britney Spears.
You can see her ‘wild child’ trying to break out thru the cracks these past few years.
By the time she’s 18 and no longer has to follow ‘their’ (Disney, Daddy, etc...) rules, she’s gonna go bonkers like Spears and Lohan. Just wait and see.
I didn’t see the video in question (as I don’t have a television) but of course I have seen a real pole dance.
We had them on the first day of May every year when I was an elementary student. With multicolored ribbons and everything.

Cottage cheese legs already at that age? On the pole dancing, ya, that’s very wrong, Hollywood is the Devils propaganda machine.
She’ll be on the cover of “Crack Whore” Magazine in a few years.
I don’t see anything wrong with it. A “pole-dance” it ain’t. It was a hotdog cart, or something like that, a prop that she jumped up on while they moved it across the stage. The “pole” was really more of a short post that she could hold on to while the thing rolled across the stage.

The marketing folks at Disney I’m sure are not helping matters.

I have 2 sons and I thank God (the Jewish one) that I did not have a girl because I don't think I could handle having a teenage daughter. I would be a cariciture of the dad who opens the door on prom night to greet my little girls filthy date with my Mossberg Persuader 12 gauge shotgun. Or maybe cleaning my AR-15 at the coffee table while he sits (and sweats)and waits for my little girl to finish getting ready.
I do not see how any father could stand by and watch his little girl look like and pretend to be a stripper and a slut in front of anyone, let alone millions of people on T.V.

She is a very pretty girl but she needs to get in the gym BIG TIME, starting yesterday! The USSA ski racer fitness program would work wonders!
I disagree. I watched the whole video and although the quality was poor, their were several moves that were definately strip pole.
I have two boys and I have to say that I am probably as concerned for my two boys as parents of girls were when I was in Jr High and High School. There is a much greater acceptance of girls being sexually active and much more tolerant with experimentation. I don’t want to sound like a prude, but I don’t think young girls(most of the audience at this show) need to have this represented as acceptable entertainment, at least at their age.
